About our opportunity:
The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Equipment Operator II in the Public Works department. The Public Works department is responsible for maintaining and improving city infrastructure, including roads, sidewalks, and storm drainage systems.
What you'll be doing:
- Operating various equipment and vehicles for maintenance, repair, and construction projects of stormwater drainage systems and city roadways.
- Driving dump trucks to haul materials to and from work sites.
- Operating specialized machinery such as skid steers and backhoes.
- Performing routine maintenance on equipment in the field and inspecting equipment for safe operation.
- Performs a variety of manual or semi-skilled labor in conjunction with maintenance and construction projects such as lifting, digging, moving. Utilizing tools such as shovels, rakes, hammers, , tamps, power equipment and other small tools and equipment.
- Communicating with supervisors, coworkers, and the public to coordinate work activities and ensure safety.

What you Bring:
We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered:
High school diploma or GED required,
Minimum of one year of experience in heavy equipment operation.
Valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements, or the ability to obtain one within 180 days of hire.
Flagger and Work Zone Safety certification within 90 days of hire.
Ability to operate complex equipment and machinery with precision and safety.
Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team.
