DESCRIPTION

BENEFITS

Summary: The Town of Berthoud is looking for a Water Operator Level 1 to assist with the operations and maintenance of the water distribution and wastewater collections systems. The ideal candidate would have a background in distribution and collections, heavy equipment operation and basic utility functions. However, we are willing to train the right candidate. This position will report directly to the Water Operations Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The following statements are illustrative of the essential functions of the job and do not include other nonessential or peripheral duties that may be required. The Town of Berthoud retains the right to modify or change the duties or essential functions of the job at any time.

Assists with the operation and maintenance of the Town's water distribution and wastewater collection system including but not limited to; main failure repairs, valve rotation, service line maintenance, fire hydrant cleaning, painting and maintenance, water main flushing, utility locates, air-vacuum valve maintenance, water meter and transponder installation / replacement, meter pit repairs, pump repair, vault repairs, irrigation ditch maintenance, lift station maintenance, manhole inspections and repairs, and CCTV of wastewater mains as needed.

Utilizes appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Responds to customer service calls in a timely and professional manner about the system, including water pressure issues, service disruptions, main failure, water quality complaints, sewer backups, taste and odor issues and other like problems.

Operates, inspects and maintains assigned equipment, including but not limited to: tandem axle dump truck, trailers, small portable vacuum unit, forklift, jackhammer, metal detector, paint sprayer, air monitor, air blower, hydro-excavation trailer, valve rotation machine, concrete cutting saw, mowers, weed eaters, portable hoist, power washer, hydraulic tamper, hydraulic hand tools, service line freeze kit and snow removal equipment, sewer camera equipment.

Performs shop, yard, auxiliary site and equipment maintenance.

Responds to emergency situations, during normal business hours and/ or after hours. Must be able to accept and work scheduled shifts for rotating on-call shifts that are 24/7 and 365 days a year for emergencies such as water main breaks, sewer breaks, customer complaints.

Completes required training units to maintain State of Colorado certification.

Demonstrates a respectful attitude towards customers and coworkers that promotes teamwork, open communication, and effective customer service.

Acts with the customer in mind, responds to requests promptly and provides effective services or solutions for customers.

Exercises appropriate level of initiative and judgment to make decisions within the scope of assigned authority. Informs Crew Lead and Operations Manager of system repair needs or inventory items.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

Methods used in construction, repair and maintenance of sewer collection and water distribution systems including use of necessary equipment, tools and materials. Operation, maintenance, and emergency repair of equipment including, but not limited to, valves, pumps, motors, fire hydrants, pressure regulating valves, leak detection equipment, vacuum truck, inspection camera, hydraulic tools, utility locate equipment.

Operations, services, principles, practices, equipment, materials, chemicals, and activities related to the operation and maintenance of water distribution and wastewater collection systems.

Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations. Water quality management system sampling as well as cross connection control management.

Compilation and recording of accurate and detailed logs and records.

Skill in:

Methods used in construction, repair and maintenance of sewer collection and water distribution systems including use of necessary equipment, tools and materials.

Operations, practices and principles, chemical handling, preventative maintenance, and emergency repair of equipment including, but not limited to, distribution and collection mains, valves, pumps, motors, fire hydrants, pressure regulating valves, leak detection equipment, vacuum truck, inspection camera, hydraulic tools, utility locate equipment.

Methods and techniques of conducting water system sampling.

Compilation and recording of accurate and detailed logs and records. Basic computer knowledge

Certificates and Licenses:

Valid Colorado Driver's License (CDL preferred)

High School Diploma / GED

CCWP Water Distribution 1 and/or Wastewater Collections 1 Certification or attainable within 12 months of hire.

Work Environment: The work environment/physical activities described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job but not limited to:

Respond to On-Call emergencies for water distribution or sewer collection infrastructure and facilities.

Work is primarily performed in an outside field environment with moderate to high noise levels.

Physical effort and activities include driving a Town-owned vehicle or personal vehicle to perform essential functions and drive to and from business meetings.

Strenuous physical work with heavy lifting, pushing or pulling of objects up to 100 pounds occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds frequently.

Must be able to access underground vaults, manholes and structures.

Exposure to adverse weather conditions, vehicle traffic, automobile fumes, toxic gases, flammable materials, confined spaces, blood borne pathogens, dust, noise, and dangers of working around construction sites.
