The Heavy Equipment Mechanic Lead (HEML) works under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor and is responsible for overseeing the daily maintenance operations of construction equipment, military vehicles, and small engine systems. The HEML will lead and coordinate the efforts of mechanics, clerks, and inspectors, ensuring efficient execution of maintenance activities and a high standard of customer service. This includes supervising equipment inspections, diagnosing faults, performing troubleshooting procedures, and verifying that all repairs are conducted in accordance with applicable standards. The HEML is also responsible for using the Automated Logistics Information System to manage maintenance records and ensure timely service. Safety, quality control, and attention to detail must be maintained at all times. On occasion, the HEML may be required to perform hands-on repair tasks, assess wear and damage on components, and replace or rebuild parts as necessary to maintain the operational readiness of supported equipment. Responsibilities Major Responibilities: Conducts scheduled and unscheduled services in accordance with current applicable Technical Manual (TM) -10, -20, and -30 level maintenance on various vehicle systems, follows TM service/lube order criteria, and perform weekly and monthly PMCS, diagnoses and troubleshoots malfunctions, performs field level maintenance on the engines, transmissions, and power train major assemblies and components, vehicular mounted environmental control systems, fuel system components, suspension systems, steering systems, hydraulic systems, fire extinguisher/suppression systems, vehicular-mounted armament, gun turret drive system, and the fire control system on the Stryker Family oi Tactical Vehicles. Performs vehicle test drives and testing of components and systems using equipment such as infrared engine analyzers, compression gauges, and computerized diagnostic devices. Uses, maintain, and 11andles shop power tools. Follows repair procedures using Maintenance Allocation Charts (MAC), as well as USG and Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) technical manuals. Tests and adjusts repaired systems to meet Military performance specifications. Performs routine and scheduled maintenance services such as oil changes, lubrications, and tune-ups. Disassembles units and inspect parts for wear, using micrometers, calipers, and gauges. Performs battlefield damage, assessment, and repair. Performs other duties as assigned. Use Automated Logistics Information System and ensure equipment records are maintain. Practice good housekeeping, and property accountability is controlled Safety /Risk assessment is to be adhered. Ensure all shop Environmental / hazardous related concerns are in compliance. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Working Environment: Work is generally conducted in a shop environment. However, duties may involve the conduct of work in the outdoors area with a potential exposure to extreme climatic condition. Work requires stooping, climbing, prolonged standing, prolong sitting and occasional working in cramped and awkward position. Frequent exposure to conditions of inclement weather, extreme heat and cold, high/low humidity, blowing sand and dust, and working in confined spaces and at heights. The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions. One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation. A normal work week is 40 hours (5 days a week). Must be willing to work additional hours when mission requires. Physical Requirements: Must be able to climb up and down ladders and stairs, as well as bend, twist, and squad for prolonged periods. Must be able to pull, push and lift up to 50 pounds. Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Visual Acuity: The worker is required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment. Material & Equipment Used: Extensive use of basic shop equipment, diagnostic equipment, hand tools, power tools, air tools, and lifting devices. Applicant must provide their own tools (general mechanics tool set) Tools must be OSHA compliance and are subject to inspection upon arrival Steel Toe shoes are required. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required in certain areas while work is being conducted. Such PPE includes but is not limited to face mask that covers the nose and mouth, head, foot, hand, vision and hearing protective devices. Periodic use of computer systems and multi-function devices (MFD) Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Education / Certifications: High School/GED, 3+ years, Performs complex tasks Must be able to pass the standard background check. Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening. NAC-I clearance required to obtain CAC. Must possess a valid Real ID State Driver's License. It is preferred the applicant to furnish their own serviceable, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) compliant, tools, that are appropriate for their required duties. Must be a U.S. citizen. Experience/Skills: 3-6 years' experience in Automotive/ General Equipment maintenance or an equivalent. Must be proficient in servicing, troubleshooting and repairing military and civilian wheeled equipment. Ability to lead a mobile maintenance team through the day-to-day logistical requirements in order to service, repair tactical, non-tactical, commercial and construction equipment. Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and cooling systems and components on various construction equipment, tracked vehicles, lawn equipment and other small engine systems in accordance with appropriate procedures and publications. Skilled in overseeing, diagnosing, and performing repairs on mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and cooling systems across various platforms, including tracked vehicles, wheeled vehicles, and power generation systems. Proficient in interpreting and applying U.S. Army Technical Manuals and OEM publications to ensure accurate maintenance procedures and standards. Strong understanding of maintenance documentation, quality assurance, and the use of maintenance information systems such as GCSS-Army. Capable of conducting inspections, troubleshooting faults, and recommending corrective actions to restore equipment to full operational status. Ability to maintain compliance with safety standards, environmental regulations, and maintenance best practices. Skilled in training and mentoring junior mechanics and support personnel, promoting team development and mission readiness. Effective communicator with the ability to coordinate with supervisors, inspectors, and support functions to prioritize workloads and meet deadlines. Familiar with operational readiness reporting, maintenance backlog tracking, and performance metrics analysis to support planning and decision-making. Customer service skills: Must be able to communicate effectively with customers and personnel. Must be able to operate electronic devices to input hours worked on timecards and complete assigned company training.
