The Opportunity

WSDOT has an exciting opportunity for an experienced mechanic who wants to utilize their skills to work on a variety of motor vehicles and highway maintenance equipment for our TEF shop located in Bellevue, WA. We are looking for a mechanic to perform preventative maintenance, inspection, and other services on all inventoried equipment including passenger vehicles, dump trucks, heavy equipment, and a variety of highway maintenance equipment. This position is critical in ensuring that equipment is ready to roll to keep our highways free of hazards and open to the traveling public year-round. What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, Heavy Equipment Mechanic will:

  • Perform preventative maintenance, inspection, and major and minor repairs on all WSDOT equipment, including all types of light and heavy equipment used in highway maintenance and construction.
  • Troubleshoot, overhaul, and repair gas and diesel engines, transmissions, electrical & electronic systems, brakes, hydraulic systems, suspensions, steering and fuel systems.
  • Repair and maintain steering and suspension systems; diagnoses and repairs hydraulic and air brake systems including anti-lock brake systems; designs, diagnoses, repairs, and installs hydraulic systems.
  • Detect and repair safety items on equipment to reduce field down time and extend the service life of equipment used by WSDOT.
  • Safely operate the following: welders, drill press, grinder, shop press, hoist, air tools, jacks and other shop equipment.
  • Fabricate, weld, and install additional equipment to vehicles.
  • Maneuver in, on, around and under various pieces of equipment for the purpose of servicing, diagnostic testing, and repairing in an efficient manner.
  • Keep the shop safe, clean, and orderly.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Technical Expertise in Equipment Maintenance and Repair: Demonstrated ability to perform preventative maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment, either through three (3) years of relevant experience assisting journey-level mechanics, or through achievement of journey-level standing as a heavy equipment mechanic (via recognized apprenticeship, labor union recognition, or one (1) year of experience as a journey-level mechanic). Proficiency in reading and interpreting equipment manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings to diagnose and resolve mechanical issues. Skilled in the operation of computerized diagnostic testing equipment, welders, drill presses, hoists, air tools, and jacks.
  • Licensing and Safety Compliance: Possession of, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment, a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with "N" and Air Brake endorsements, no automatic transmission restriction, and valid DOT medical certification. Knowledge of and commitment to adhering to state, federal, and workplace safety regulations.
  • Technology and Information Management: Competency in using Microsoft Office Suite and fleet management software such as M5 Fleet Equipment Management System to track, document, and report maintenance and repairs.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Ability to effectively communicate technical information verbally and in writing to coworkers, supervisors, and other stakeholders. Experience collaborating in a team-oriented work environment to support operational and maintenance objectives.
  • Physical and Work Environment Readiness: Ability to safely lift and transport up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation. The ability to remain standing for up to 30 minutes at a time and alternate between standing and walking for extended periods during a work shift. Capacity to work in a warehouse, shop, and field environment while operating required tools and equipment.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent, demonstrating foundational academic preparation to support technical training and applied learning.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Successful completion of vocational technical training in heavy equipment, light vehicles and/or industrial/commercial equipment repair, including welding/fabrication.
  • Current Class A Commercial Driver's License with "N" and Air Brake endorsements, no automatic transmission restriction and DOT medical certification or the ability to obtain license within 6 (six) months of employment.

  • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County. An additional 10% assignment pay is included in the salary for this job class.
