POSITION OVERVIEW: As a Rail Superintendent at LJA Rail , you will be responsible for Operating CDL vehicles (e.g., flatbeds, roll-offs, lowboys) to deliver rail materials, tools, and equipment to various job sites. You will also be in charge of analyzing expenditures and other financial information in order to develop plans and budgets for increasing profits and reducing costs.
A TYPICAL DAY MIGHT INCLUDE:
- Ensure proper loading, securement, and unloading of all cargo.
- Conduct daily vehicle inspections and maintain accurate DOT logs.
- Follow all FMCSA, DOT, and company safety regulations.
- Maintain communication with dispatch or site supervisors regarding delivery schedules and route updates.
- Coordinate material and equipment movements between yard, shop, and field locations.
- Assist with inventory tracking, tool and material staging, and organization at job sites and storage areas.
- Support delivery and pick-up of specialized rail equipment such as hi-rail vehicles, tampers, and generators.
- Ensure all tools, supplies, and rail materials are available and ready for scheduled work shifts.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of trailers, trucks, laydown yards, and storage containers.
- Work closely with field supervisors, mechanics, and warehouse staff to fulfill logistical needs.
- Define and monitor key performance metrics and processes to improve efficiency and meet corporate goals.
- Identify and correct service issues to ensure service reliability and provide continuous improvement to meet customer demands.
- Effectively utilize performance management and interpersonal skills to coach, train and provide feedback to maximize employee potential.
- Collaborate with other departments to formulate and implement policies, procedures, goals and objectives.
REQUIRED EDUCATION/LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Valid CDL Class A or B license with clean driving record.
- Minimum 2 years of commercial driving experience (construction or rail preferred).
- Knowledge of railroad construction materials and equipment is a plus.
- Familiarity with DOT and FMCSA regulations.
- Must be able to pass DOT physical, drug/alcohol screening, and background check.
- Willingness to travel and work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Strong attention to detail, time management, and communication skills.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Detailed working knowledge of all applicable FRA rules and regulations.
- FRA Roadway Worker Protection (RWP) certified or ability to obtain.
- OSHA 10/30 certification or related safety training.
- Experience in railroad or heavy civil logistics preferred.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills, as well as analytical skills for reviewing costs and preparing budget reports.
- Time management, organizational and effective planning skills to achieve work deadlines.
- Ability to work outdoors and in a fast-paced 24/7 operational environment.
- Computer Skills Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project
- Must be eligible to work in the United States.
