About the Position:

The Bulk Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing the handling, storage, processing, and distribution of bulk materials such as salt, sand, gravel, and other aggregates. This position ensures efficient, safe, and compliant operations across all facets of the bulk material supply chain. The manager leads site teams and coordinates with logistics, sales, and safety departments to meet customer demands, maintain inventory integrity, and drive operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage day-to-day operations of bulk material handling, including intake, stockpiling, blending, and outbound shipping of salt and aggregates.
  • Oversee equipment such as front-end loaders, conveyors, hoppers, storage domes, silos, and bulk trucks.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations (MSHA, OSHA, DOT, EPA).
  • Maintain accurate bulk inventory records and coordinate stock levels with procurement and sales teams.
  • Lead and train operations staff in best practices for handling salt and aggregates, including moisture control, contamination prevention, and material quality.
  • Coordinate inbound and outbound logistics including barge, rail, and truck transport.
  • Implement preventive maintenance schedules for bulk handling equipment and coordinate repairs.
  • Develop and improve SOPs to enhance operational efficiency, product quality, and worker safety.
  • Track KPIs and operational metrics; prepare reports for senior management.
  • Identify and execute cost-saving and process improvement initiatives across operations.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Operations Management, Logistics, Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
  • 5+ years of experience managing bulk materials operations, with a focus on salt, aggregates, or construction materials.
  • Strong understanding of aggregate and salt handling, stockpile management, material flow, and transportation logistics.
  • Experience managing teams in an industrial, quarry, mining, or terminal setting.
  • Working knowledge of heavy equipment, conveyors, and material handling systems.
  • Proficient in MS Office and ERP/WMS systems; experience with GPS, scales, and fleet tracking tools a plus.
  • Familiarity with environmental and safety standards applicable to bulk material storage and distribution.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with seasonal operations (e.g., winter deicing salt distribution).
  • Working knowledge of MSHA regulations (for quarry or mining operations).
  • Knowledge of marine terminal operations

Physical Requirements :

  • Ability to work in outdoor conditions, sometimes in inclement weather.
  • Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to [X] pounds (if applicable).
  • Extended periods of standing, walking, or driving within the terminal or warehouse.

Working Conditions:

  • The role will require working at a port or terminal, which may involve shift work, including weekends and holidays.
