Position Summary
Performs a variety of journeyman level work in preparing, painting, finishing and maintaining a wide variety of interior and exterior building surfaces and structures on campus as directed by management.
Responsibilities
All employees are expected to act in a professional manner and to share the common values of respect and decency toward one another.
Painters apply paint, varnish, stain and other finishes to walls, ceilings and furniture in college buildings and residences. They also paint the outside of buildings, industrial structures and private homes, and use finishes that protect against erosion, and bad weather. Part of a painter's job is to clean the building's surface, fill holes and remove nails, and scrape off old paint before applying new coats.
Painters must know how to work with materials and surfaces such as metal, brick, wood, stone and plaster. These professionals should also be knowledgeable about painting techniques such as spackling, distressing, sheen striping, rag-rolling, marbling and sponging. Good manual dexterity, vision and attention to detail are all qualities required of the position.
Prepares, primes, sands, seals, patches, and paints furniture, surfaces, buildings and fixtures utilizing all types of painting materials, including but not limited to, varnish, lacquer, shellac, enamel, latex, epoxy, alkyds, and waterproofing finishes.
Tapes, repairs both plaster and sheetrock (gypsum wall board)
Completes work requests as assigned by management related to college wide building and structure maintenance, renovations, remodeling and new construction.
Responsible for the safe operation, cleanliness, and maintenance of painting equipment, including but not limited to, brushes, rollers, sprayers, pumps, and power washers.
Responsible for the safe assembly and operation of all scaffolding, ladders, and other rigging equipment as needed.
Responsible for the immediate response to and removal of graffiti on campus grounds using appropriate products and solutions.
Participates in the assembly and construction of various signs as needed on campus.
Teams with other departments within the college, including but not limited to, Maintenance & Operations, Campus Safety, and the special events staff to maintain college facilities and complete assignments related to college operations.
Responds as needed to emergency events/situations related to weather, violence/terrorism, etc.
Cover floors and furniture with drop-cloths and tarps to protect surfaces
Remove fixtures such as pictures, door knobs, or electric switch covers prior to finish work and replaces once completed.
Position is required to work a reasonable amount of overtime as determined by the college.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required. Degree from a Vocational/Technical School preferred. Five (5) years (or equivalent) as a full-time professional painter (journeyman) with interior and exterior experience in a residential and commercial, industrial or facilities setting required. Valid driver's license required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Knowledge of OSHA & lead regulations, personal protective equipment (PPE), and fall hazards. Knowledge of interior and exterior painting techniques and processes.
Ability to operate all painting tools equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
Ability to read and understand blueprints.
Ability to mix and match paints, varnishes, stains etc.
Ability to maintain cooperative, professional, and respectful working relationships with all employees, contractors, vendors, and business partners of the college.
Ability to work off of a ladder, scaffolding, and or areal lift. Erects scaffolding, rigging and ladders as necessary in a manner consistent with safety codes.
Ability to work independently or in a team oriented environment.
Problem solving and time management skills.
Basic computer skills a plus.
Maintains appropriate service and repair records.
Supervises student or temporary employees during a major portion of the employee's work time.
Compensation Range:
