The Hamilton County Engineer's Office is seeking a Highway Maintenance Supervisor to lead a regional division of our highway maintenance operations. This is a key leadership position responsible for planning, directing, and overseeing the work of multiple crews in roadway, bridge, and drainage maintenance.
The Supervisor role goes beyond technical expertise-it is first and foremost about leadership. The ideal candidate will be able to:

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under general direction, the Highway Maintenance Supervisor provides leadership and direction for the Regional Highway Maintenance Division. This position not only oversees day-to-day operations and technical maintenance activities but also serves as a key leader responsible for guiding, developing, and supporting employees. The Supervisor must balance technical expertise with strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills to ensure employees feel valued, supported, and motivated while meeting organizational goals.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering, construction or related field, and five (5) years' work experience in highway or bridge construction and maintenance or other related infrastructure projects of which at least one (1) of the years in a supervisory role; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess a valid state of residency driver's license. Must remain insurable under the County's vehicle insurance policy. Must possess a Class A CDL license.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Supervises the day-to-day operations of a Regional Highway Maintenance Division;
- Supervises the activities of highway maintenance staff;
- Plans, schedules and assigns employee work;
- Recommends disciplinary actions and commendations;
- Receives and addresses grievances in accordance with established policies;
- Authorizes all types of leave requests;
- Provides daily leadership, mentorship, and accountability for staff, ensuring employees are supported in both professional and personal challenges that affect workplace performance.
- Assists with planning and coordinating highway and bridge maintenance, snow and ice removal, repair and construction projects;
- Confers with Maintenance Operations Program Manager to establish priorities;
- Determines material and manpower requirements and ensures the availability of tools, equipment, material, and personnel;
- Responsible for day-to-day operations;
- Supervises mechanics and fleet operations;
- Addresses public complaints and facilitates resolution;
- Exercises sound judgment when making difficult decisions under pressure and communicate clearly with employees, the public, and other stakeholders;
- Prepares and maintains reports and records reflecting work progress, materials and equipment usage;
- Inspects roadways and bridges on a regular basis and reports on needed repairs;
- Operates light to heavy equipment used on construction projects;
- Oversees projects and directs personnel in repair activities;
- Attends meetings and serves on committees, as directed;
- Attends training and seminars, as directed;
- Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions;
- Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance;
- Due to the nature of the job, when scheduled for on-call assignment, the Highway Maintenance Supervisor must be available to return to work after normal work hours or on weekends and/or holidays when called to do so;
- Performs other duties as assigned.
