Master Electrician

The St. Cloud Public Works Department is looking to hire a Master Electrician. A Master Electrician is responsible for performing a wide range of electrical work, including project execution, wiring system design, repair, and maintenance, while maintaining accurate inventory and records. This role requires both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise to maintain and protect traffic signals, street lighting, underground electrical power systems, and the citys communication infrastructure. Strong communication skills are essential for effective collaboration with administration, engineers, consultants, and general public.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

1. Signing Master Electrician Responsibilities

  • Procure and sign electrical permits as necessary for electrical projects.
  • Fluent with electrical construction standards, materials and practices.
  • Responsible for other electrical maintenance personnel within the city.
  • Review electrical codes and requirements.
  • Oversee and effectively communicate with contractors and other city electrical personnel.
  • Maintain required electrician licenses and training as per the State of Minnesota rules and regulations.

2. Maintenance & Operations

  • Repair traffic signal, street lighting and other electrical equipment.
  • Be readily available (when possible) for emergency electrical repairs.
  • Safely operate motorized and non-motorized equipment, vehicles, tools and other devices.
  • Operate basic computer programs and applications as required by the city and department.
  • Familiar with basic Occupational Safety & Health Administration related safety standards for the electrical trade.
  • Order and receive electrical material quotes for city related projects.
  • Maintain adequate stocks of lighting, traffic signal and sundry electric related parts and materials.
  • Communicate with the general public about concerns related to traffic signal, street lighting or other electrically related issues for city owned equipment or devices.
  • Be responsive to street lighting, traffic signal and other electrical issues as they are reported to the city.
  • Maintain and oversee the Gopher State One Call system to protect traffic signal and street lighting underground electrical power and communication assets of the city.
  • File and record electrical modifications, updates, plans and projects related to traffic signals and street lighting.
  • Determine when electrical equipment is obsolete, no longer serviceable/available and must be replaced or updated.
  • Proficient in troubleshooting electrical equipment and devices. Understand how to replace defective devices and equipment.

3. Electrical Construction

  • Review traffic signal, street lighting and other electrical project plans.
  • Inspect city electrical projects related to traffic signals, street lighting and other transportation systems.
  • Review, follow, modify and red line electrical plans.
  • Organize plans, projects, maintenance records and other materials.
  • Calculate and generate electrical material lists for projects.
  • Calculate electrical loads, power losses, efficiencies and other factors to determine proper materials and equipment for electrical projects.
  • Analyze electrical project short-term and long-term costs and determine best returns on investments.
  • Assist traffic systems manager, engineers and consultants with electrical designs and projects.
  • Performs other work as required and assigned.

Schedule : A basic workday of eight (8) consecutive working hours exclusive of any lunch period, and a basic work week of forty (40) hours, Monday through Friday. The position is subject to after-hours calls and emergencies. Hours include nights, weekends, and holidays.
