This is a full-time position located at the State Museum in New Orleans, LA.

This position performs general complex carpentry work involving the construction, alteration, repair, or maintenance in historically significant Museum buildings. This position performs complex and detailed carpentry work on the Museum displays to include construction of museum galleries, display cases, and exhibit areas which requires a high degree of precision. This position also builds other wood items including furniture and cabinets for specific use.

One year of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been on-the-job experience: Three years of experience or training in the carpentry trade.

  • Build, construct, repair, alter, renovate, and reproduce trim, ceilings, partitions, walls, floors, shelves, cabinets, exhibit cases, windows, window screens, doors, furniture, picture frames, stairs, steps, porches, spindles, banisters, and other wood related items; some of which require the ability to reproduce to the original historical design and quality.
  • Will be responsible for the repair and/or installation of locks, windows, and door glass and other security-related devices.
  • Use tables saw, power saw, joiner, wood lathes, planers, drills, sanders, and other carpentry equipment and tools. Maintain same to include cleaning, sharpening, repairs, and other general maintenance as required.
  • Fit, cut, and finish sheetrock; install, fit, and cut paneling, plywood, frames, blinds, shutters, and miscellaneous wallcoverings.
  • Act as lead worker to other trades involved in complex construction jobs such as museum exhibit installation.
  • Perform other related work as assigned.


Position-Specific Details:
  • Appointment Type: This is a probational appointment. Current permanent status state employees may be required to accept a probational appointment.
  • Work Schedule: This is a full-time position that reports in-office. This position may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or overtime. This position will be required to travel between Museum locations.
