Skilled Tradesman (HVAC Tradesman)

This is skilled work in the general trades which may include the supervision of semi-skilled helpers. An employee in this class is responsible for work in the alteration and maintenance of HVAC equipment and associated structures. Work involves determining work methods and occasional participation of work assignments, as well as responsibility for the quality of work produced. Employee receives assignments in oral and written form, frequently accompanied by sketches, diagrams, and blueprints. Performs skilled work in alteration and maintenance of buildings and equipment. Lays out and estimates time and materials for jobs when requested. Assists supervisor with planning of jobs when requested. Installs air conditioners. Performs emergency plumbing and electrical repairs as related to the maintenance of HVAC equipment. Performs related work as required. May be required to perform any other duties required by the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds and/or other designated supervisor.
Performs maintenance and service repairs on heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems. Familiar with a variety of the fields concepts, practices, and procedures including integrated control systems and mechanical troubleshooting and repair. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of complicated tasks on all types of HVAC systems. May lead and direct the work of others using a wide degree of creativity and latitude.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Considerable knowledge of materials, methods, and practices in the building maintenance and repair trades; ability to work from drawings; ability to assess problems and make repairs with minimum supervision. Considerable knowledge of materials, methods, and practices in the building maintenance and repair trade of heating and cooling controls. Must be capable of carrying up to 70 pounds such as tools and equipment and 8 ladder up and down stairs. Must be able to work from varying heights off of a ladder, scaffolding or movable lift in the performance of duties. Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or its equivalent plus 4 years of experience in the field OR any suitable equivalent combination of experience and training. D-2 license preferred; S-2 or SM-2 is desirable.
Special Requirements
A valid CT drivers license and transportation to and from the office or job site will be required.
Pay rate effective 7/1/2026: $ 32.00 - $ 41.23
