Job Description:

The Field Applications Engineer, Electrical Systems will play a critical role in the design, validation, testing, and deployment of Nextpowers utility-scale PV + Storage power plant solutions. This hybrid role combines responsibilities across Electrical Balance of System (eBOS) engineering and Field Application Engineering, supporting both product development and real-world implementation.

The engineer will work across the full lifecycle of electrical systemsincluding design, integration, testing, commissioning, and field supportensuring reliable, compliant, and high-performance operation of Nextpowers power block technologies.

This position is based in Fremont, California, with periodic travel to test facilities and project sites.

Key Responsibilities

System Design & Integration

  • Develop and validate eBOS designs, including DC and AC collection systems, cabling, grounding, protection, and interconnection components.
  • Define and manage system interfaces between PV modules, DC/DC converters, inverters, transformers, switchgear, and control systems.
  • Generate and review electrical design documentation such as single-line diagrams (SLDs), wiring schematics, and interconnection drawings.
  • Collaborate with product and systems engineering teams to integrate eBOS into PV + Storage power block solutions.

Testing, Validation & Commissioning

  • Conduct system-level testing and validation at Nextpower test facilities (Fremont, San Jose, and Brazil) and at project sites.
  • Execute performance, functionality, and grid compliance testing for inverters, battery systems, and PV optimizers.
  • Analyze test results and M&V data to identify performance improvements and design optimizations.
  • Develop and enhance testing infrastructure, procedures, and capabilities.

Field Support & Troubleshooting

  • Support commissioning and deployment of power plant systems in the field.
  • Provide technical guidance and troubleshooting support for electrical and system-level issues.
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for field and development issues.
  • Diagnose and resolve electrical faults, including grounding and communication issues in PV + BESS systems.

Standards, Compliance & Documentation

  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards (NEC, UL, IEEE, IEC, NFPA).
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including commissioning procedures, installation guidelines, and maintenance processes.
  • Support grid interconnection and compliance requirements (e.g., protection coordination, voltage/frequency response).

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with R&D, product engineering, quality, and supplier teams to improve system design and reliability.
  • Work with suppliers to evaluate and qualify electrical components and ensure quality standards are met.
  • Support customer-facing activities and ensure successful deployment and operation of systems.

Qualifications & Experience

Required

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in electrical engineering, power systems, solar PV, or energy storage.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • AC/DC power systems and distribution
    • Power conversion systems (inverters, DC/DC converters)
    • eBOS function and application
    • Electrical protection, grounding, and coordination
  • Experience with electrical design documentation (SLDs, schematics).
  • Hands-on experience with testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting power systems.
  • Familiarity with industry standards (NEC, UL, IEEE, IEC).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally (2550%).

Preferred

  • Masters degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Experience with PV + Storage hybrid systems and grid integration.
  • Knowledge of SCADA, controls, and communication protocols (Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850).
  • Experience with supplier quality, manufacturing, or component qualification.
  • Background in inverter systems, power plant controls, or performance testing.

Pay is based on market location and may vary based on factors including experience, skills, education and other job-related reasons. The annual salary range for this position is $100,000.00-$110,000.00. (Applicable to California)
