Machine Operator Job Description This role operates a variety of steel fabrication machines to cut, drill, and form structural materials with a high degree of precision and safety. You will set up and run equipment such as burn tables, plasma cutters, drill lines, saws, shears, and press brakes, while also handling rigging operations with overhead cranes. You ensure all work follows detailed CAD drawings, meets tight tolerances, and aligns with strict quality and safety standards in a busy metal fabrication shop. Responsibilities Import programs and set up machines, confirming that the file on the machine matches the imported program before beginning operations. Perform a complete safety check of each machine prior to use, verifying guards, emergency stops, and operating conditions. Set up and operate the burn table to process plate materials according to design specifications and programmed parameters. Select and adjust machine settings to achieve optimal burning, drilling, cutting, and forming operations for different materials and thicknesses. Operate a range of shop equipment, including drill presses, drill lines, plasma tables, burn tables, brake presses / press brakes, shears, band saws, and CNC saws. Transfer layout data accurately onto materials to ensure correct placement of cuts, holes, and features. Perform basic machine maintenance, cleaning, and troubleshooting to keep equipment in safe and reliable working condition. Safely rig, lift, and position heavy steel beams and plate using overhead cranes, slings, and rigging hardware. Inspect rigging equipment before use, identify potential issues, and follow all rigging and lifting safety protocols. Move materials efficiently through the shop to support smooth production flow and minimize downtime. Measure materials and finished parts to ensure conformance with design specifications and required tolerances. Read and interpret CAD drawings, symbols, notes, and cut lists to determine correct dimensions, hole locations, and cut patterns. Verify dimensions using tape measures, squares, calipers, and other measuring tools, typically to within 1/16 inch. Inspect finished parts for accuracy, quality, and compliance with project requirements before releasing them to the next stage of production. Essential Skills Proven experience operating CNC machines such as burn tables, plasma cutters, drill lines, and CNC saws. Hands-on experience operating overhead cranes and safely rigging heavy materials. Back ground in steel fabrication or heavy manufacturing environments. Ability to read and interpret CAD drawings, cut lists, and fabrication blueprints. Familiarity with steel grades, tolerances, and standard fabrication processes. Proficiency in operating equipment including drill presses, drill lines, shears, press brakes, band saws, and CNC saws. Strong measurement skills using tape measures, squares, calipers, and similar tools to tight tolerances (to within 1/16 inch). Capability to perform basic machine maintenance, cleaning, and troubleshooting. Knowledge of safe rigging practices and the use of slings, hooks, and rigging hardware. Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high quality and safety standards. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience as a beam line operator or angle line operator in a structural steel environment. Prior exposure to structural steel fabrication, including working with beams, plate, and angles. General fabrication experience, including layout, cutting, and forming of steel components. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Cocoa, FL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $28.00/hr.
