Diesel Mechanic Job Description Join a tight-knit, non-corporate shop as a Diesel Mechanic, where you will keep motorcoaches and school buses safe, reliable, and ready to serve the community. Responsibilities Perform routine and preventative maintenance on motorcoaches and school buses to ensure safe and reliable operation. Diagnose and repair diesel engines, cooling systems, and related mechanical components. Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems, including wiring, controls, and related components. Service and repair HVAC and A/C systems to maintain passenger comfort and system reliability. Inspect, service, and repair brake systems to meet safety and regulatory standards. Troubleshoot and repair air suspension systems to ensure proper ride quality and vehicle handling. Assist with body repairs and cosmetic damage fixes on buses and motorcoaches as needed. Perform light plumbing work on motorcoach systems as required. Conduct thorough inspections and document all maintenance and repair work performed. Ensure all vehicles meet DOT and safety standards before returning them to service. Collaborate closely with a small team of mechanics to keep the fleet operating efficiently. Support occasional bus route driving when driver coverage is needed, typically about 1.5 hours in the morning and 2.5 hours in the afternoon. Follow shop procedures and safety practices while maintaining a clean and organized work area. Essential Skills Hands-on experience performing maintenance and repairs on diesel-powered vehicles, preferably buses or motorcoaches. Strong knowledge of diesel engines, including diagnostics, repair, and general mechanical work. Ability to troubleshoot and repair electrical systems on commercial vehicles. Experience working with HVAC and A/C systems in automotive or bus applications. Proficiency in inspecting, servicing, and repairing brake systems. Experience working with air suspension systems on heavy vehicles. Capability to perform preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repair work in a shop environment. Ability to document repairs accurately and ensure compliance with DOT and safety standards. Comfort working independently with minimal supervision while contributing to a small team. Willingness to occasionally drive bus routes when needed to support operations. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working in a small or non-corporate shop environment. Familiarity with motorcoach systems, including light plumbing work. Exposure to engine rebuild work, with access to in-shop rebuild experience as a resource. Ability to assist with bodywork and cosmetic repairs on buses and motorcoaches. Personal tools preferred, with assistance available if additional tools are needed. Engine rebuild experience is available within the shop as a resource, and while personal tools are preferred, assistance is available if needed. The schedule follows a Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM shift during the school year, with a Monday-Thursday schedule in the summer. Occasional short bus driving assignments may be part of the day when driver coverage is needed.
