Diesel Truck and Trailer Mechanic Job Description This role focuses on inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing diesel trucks, trailers, and related equipment to ensure they operate safely and efficiently. You will perform comprehensive mechanical and electrical work, conduct preventative maintenance, and use diagnostic tools to resolve complex issues. Responsibilities Perform thorough inspections of diesel engines, trucks, trailers, and related equipment to identify mechanical and electrical issues. Diagnose and repair problems related to engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension systems, electrical components, and hydraulic systems. Conduct routine preventative maintenance, including oil changes, filter replacements, brake adjustments, lubrication, and system checks. Use diagnostic software, diagnostic equipment, and hand tools to troubleshoot and resolve complex mechanical and electrical issues. Repair or replace defective parts such as fuel systems, axles, hydraulic components, air brake components, and pneumatic systems. Carry out trailer-specific maintenance and repairs to ensure trailers remain safe, roadworthy, and compliant with relevant regulations. Perform DOT inspections and ensure all work complies with applicable safety and inspection standards. Maintain accurate records of all repairs, inspections, and maintenance performed, including parts used and work completed. Operate shop equipment and machinery safely, including lifts, forklifts, and power tools, following all safety procedures. Keep work areas clean, organized, and free of hazards to promote a safe and efficient shop environment. Collaborate with team members and supervisors to prioritize work, complete assignments efficiently, and meet deadlines. Work independently when required, making sound decisions regarding diagnostics and repairs. Perform welding tasks as needed for trailer and equipment repairs. Lift and move heavy equipment and parts (typically up to 50-75 pounds) as required during repairs. Support fleet maintenance activities for trucks, trailers, and heavy equipment, including farm machinery, Caterpillar equipment, and RV trailers when applicable. Follow company policies, safety guidelines, and quality standards in all aspects of work. Work flexible hours, including overtime when needed, to support shop operations across multiple shifts. Essential Skills Proven experience as a Diesel Technician, Mechanic, or in a similar role working with diesel trucks and trailers. Strong knowledge of diesel engines, including diagnosis and repair of engine-related issues. Strong understanding of electrical systems and the ability to troubleshoot and repair electrical components. Experience working with hydraulic components and systems on trucks and trailers. Ability to diagnose and repair issues in engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension systems, and air brake systems. Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, hand tools, and shop equipment for troubleshooting and repairs. Understanding of preventative maintenance practices and inspection procedures for diesel trucks and trailers. Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and work orders accurately. Valid driver's license. Ability to lift heavy equipment and parts (typically 50-75 pounds) and work in physically demanding conditions. Strong attention to detail with a commitment to safety and high-quality workmanship. Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced shop environment. Willingness to work flexible hours, including overtime when required. Additional Skills & Qualifications Certification from a technical school or ASE certifications (preferred but not required). Some welding experience for trailer and equipment repair. Experience with diesel maintenance, mechanical repair, and preventive maintenance on trucks and trailers. Familiarity with DOT inspection requirements and procedures. Experience working with hydraulics, pneumatics, and heavy equipment systems. Familiarity with farm machinery, Caterpillar equipment, and RV trailers is a plus. Experience operating heavy equipment is beneficial. Experience working with fleet maintenance operations is an advantage. Comfort using major shop tools and diagnostic equipment, which will be provided. Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort working with engines, transmissions, brakes, and suspension components. Work Environment This position is based in a shop environment that supports diesel truck, trailer, and heavy equipment maintenance. The facility operates Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to midnight, with a first shift from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and a second shift from 3:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. The shop can be hot in the summers and cold in the winters, and the role involves physically demanding work, including lifting up to approximately 50 pounds and working around heavy equipment and machinery. You will regularly use diagnostic tools, hand tools, lifts, forklifts, power tools, and other major shop equipment, which are provided.
