Welders also maintain welding equipment and monitor the welding process. Responsibilities Read blueprints: Interpret blueprints, sketches, and specifications Measure parts: Calculate the dimensions of parts to be welded Inspect materials: Examine materials or structures to be welded Weld parts: Join metal parts together in flat, vertical, or overhead positions Monitor process: Adjust heat as needed to avoid overheating Maintain equipment: Keep welding equipment and machinery in good working order Detect issues: Identify faulty equipment or defective material and report to a supervisor Welder competency is a welder's level of knowledge and skill, as well as their ability to follow safety guidelines. Welders who are competent are able to perform their work safely and to the required specifications. Additional tasks may be required.
