Job Summary
The Assistant District Architect assists the Architectural Services Manager in coordinating architectural design, drafting production, and project documentation for district construction, renovation, and facility improvement projects. The position helps oversee architectural drafting personnel, manages drawing workflows and backlog priorities, and supports the development, organization, and maintenance of district design standards and construction documentation. This position provides architectural design support, drafting review, coordination with consultants and district personnel, and assistance with facility planning efforts. This position may require work beyond 40 hours per week. Other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions
Design & Production:
Creates, reviews, and coordinates design drawings and construction documents using CAD and BIM software in both 2D and 3D formats.
Coordinates and produces architectural drawings and project documentation in accordance with project specifications, district standards, and applicable codes.
Conducts field verification and site visits to confirm existing conditions and support development of accurate construction documents.
Project Coordination:
Performs professional architectural and project coordination duties related to the design, drafting, renovation, construction, and maintenance of district facilities.
Coordinates with consultants, contractors, maintenance personnel, and district administrators regarding project documentation and design needs.
Supports project coordination efforts during planning, design, bidding, and construction phases.
Reviews pay applications from external design consultants.
Technical Leadership & Standards:
Under the direction of the Architectural Services Manager, coordinates and prioritizes architectural drafting workloads and project assignments to meet established deadlines.
Provides guidance, training, and technical support to architectural drafting staff.
Reviews architectural drawings and project documents by consultants and architectural drafting personal for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with district standards and building codes prior to final approval by Architectural Services Manager.
Assists with the development and implementation of district drafting standards, CAD standards, and BIM processes and upkeep digital library.
Required Knowledge and Skills
Architectural Coordination: Mastery of architectural project coordination, quality control, and document management processes.
Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in AutoCAD required; Professional working knowledge of Revit and Bluebeam preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite programs: Word, Excel, Outlook and Project preferred.
Codes & Standards: In-depth knowledge of building codes, accessibility standards, and educational facility design principles.
Leadership: Ability to lead collaborative project discussions with district staff, consultants, and contractors. Possess strong interpersonal skills along with a demonstrated ability to work as a team with a diverse group of people.
Required Education, Training, and Qualifications
Requires a valid driver's license.
Requires a bachelor's degree in architecture from an NAAB-accredited School of Architecture, or equal.
Master's degree in architecture preferred.
Required Prior Experience
Requires a minimum of eight (8) years of occupational experience in architectural drafting, design, construction documentation, and project coordination.
A current architectural registration/license in the state of Utah is preferred.
Four (4) years of experience as a project lead in charge of, and providing design guidance to, drafting staff is preferred.
Assigned Decision Making
Ability to make independent project decisions with architectural drafting staff and to communicate the reasoning and factors leading to these decisions to the Architectural Services Manager and/or Director of Architecture, Engineering and Construction.
Supervisory Responsibility
Provides day-to-day oversight, coordination, and technical guidance for assigned architectural drafting personnel.
Physical Requirements
Communication: Regularly required to speak and/or hear.
Mobility: Frequently required to stand, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, and crouch; occasionally required to climb or balance.
Vision: Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
Lifting: Must frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
