JOB SUMMARY: This position operates light construction equipment in the maintenance of parks grounds and facilities.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: Cemetery Supervisor or Crew Leader assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include the Personnel Policy Manual; OSHA regulations; work zone safety standards; and equipment operation and repair manuals. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related duties in the operation of assigned equipment. Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the work.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to operate light equipment in the maintenance of the City's parks and cemeteries. Success in this position contributes to well-maintained City parks.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers and members of the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, stooping, standing, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.
JOB SUMMARY: This position operates light construction equipment in the maintenance of parks grounds and facilities.
- Safely and efficiently operates a backhoe to open and close graves and uses large mowing equipment to assist with maintenance of cemetery grounds at three cemeteries according to schedule.
- Assist with cleaning of cemetery buildings, removing litter and debris and landscaping activities such as raking leaves, pruning shrubs and trees or adjusting foot markers to keep grounds looking neat and attractive.
- Perform routine cleaning and maintenance on equipment to minimize downtime and extend the life of the equipment.
- Promptly responds when called on weekends to assist in opening and closing graves according to funeral schedules.
- Occasionally operates tractor with dump trailer as well as pickup truck with trailer attached.
- As needed, will occasionally fill in for Crew Supervisor to assist with processing work orders and leading the crew in misc. duties in support of Cemetery Division operations.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must have a valid North Carolina driver's license.
- Must have experience with outdoor work--operating backhoe, mower, weed eater, chain saw and misc. power and hand tools.
- CDL's preferred but not required. Must have the ability to follow oral and written instruction and must have the desire to learn cemetery procedures.
- Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance procedures.
- Knowledge of safety standards.
- Skill in analyzing problems and identifying solutions.
- Skill in the repair and maintenance of hand tools.
- Skill in the operation of tractors and dump trucks.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
