The Director of System Layout and Structural Engineering will lead the development and execution of innovative structural system solutions, driving programs from proof of concept through large-scale deployment across our warehouse automation platform. This leader brings a solutions-oriented mindset, a bias for action, and the determination to overcome complex challenges while delivering high-quality, scalable results.

As a leader within the Layout Engineering organization, you will partner closely with Product Engineering, Solutions, Project Execution, and Strategic Partner teams to drive the successful design, development, and integration of our warehouse structural systems. Symbotic operates in a fast-paced, high-growth environment, making your ability to lead, inspire, and develop high-performing engineering teams critical to delivering reliable, scalable products to market.

What youll do

  • Leverage broad engineering leadership experience to lead the System Layout and Structural Engineering organization in delivering high-quality design packages, installation documentation, and Bill of Materials (BOM) releases supporting the deployment of Symbotic warehouse automation systems.

  • Build and maintain strong cross-functional partnerships with customers, architects, consultants, and internal stakeholders across Solutions, Product Engineering, and Project Execution to support successful system design, integration, and new product introduction efforts.

  • Drive alignment and collaboration across the departments core functional areas 3D Design (Revit), 2D Design (AutoCAD), Structural Engineering, and BOM Management ensuring seamless execution across all phases of system development and deployment.

  • Foster a continuous improvement culture across 2D, 3D, and BOM workflows, with a focus on scalability, operational efficiency, and increasing departmental capacity to support a growing customer base and expanding project portfolio.

  • Champion the development and adoption of advanced CAD automation, parametric modeling, API integrations, and AI-assisted engineering workflows, leveraging tools such as AutoLISP , Dynamo for Revit, and custom plug-ins to improve design accuracy, efficiency, and cycle time reduction.

  • Continue the implementation and optimization of project management tools, including Smartsheet, to strengthen resource planning, workload balancing, project visibility, and reporting capabilities across a growing engineering organization.

  • Establish and scale structured, data-driven decision-making processes to effectively manage design conflicts, competing priorities, and the integration of new product introduction (NPI) system subassemblies into standardized product offerings.

  • Promote a collaborative, team-oriented culture grounded in accountability, process discipline, attention to detail, and pride in delivering high-quality work products.

  • Ensure departmental excellence in the accuracy, quality, and completeness of Project Design Review deliverables, while driving timely execution against Stage Gate program milestones and implementation schedules.

What youll need

  • Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering , Structural Engineering, or a related engineering discipline required .

  • Minimum 12+ years of progressive experience in structural engineering, system layout engineering, industrial infrastructure, warehouse automation, material handling, robotics, or related technical environments.

  • Minimum 5+ years of leadership experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams across structural engineering, BIM/Revit, CAD design, and systems integration functions.

  • Proven experience leading large-scale industrial, warehouse automation, material handling, or robotics system deployments from concept development through installation and operational execution.

  • Strong experience designing and integrating structural steel systems and industrial infrastructure within high-volume operational environments.

  • Demonstrated ability to partner cross-functionally with Product Engineering, Solutions, Manufacturing, Project Execution, customers, and external partners to drive complex deployment programs.

  • Experience scaling engineering processes, design standardization, CAD automation, and operational efficiencies within fast-paced, high-growth organizations.

  • Experience with warehouse automation technologies such as ASRS, conveyors, robotics, palletizing systems, or automated fulfillment solutions strongly preferred.

  • Strong customer-facing leadership and execution experience, including resolving field, installation, integration, and operational challenges.

  • Expertise with BIM/CAD platforms such as Revit and AutoCAD, including familiarity with design automation and parametric modeling tools.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent customer deployments with aggressive timelines and operational complexity.

  • Strong understanding of engineering governance, quality management, design review processes, and stage-gate development methodologies.

O ur Environment

  • Up to 50% of travel may be required . Employees must have a valid drivers license and the ability to drive and/or fly to client and other customer locations.

  • The employee is responsible for owning a credit card and managing expenses personally to be reimbursed on a bi-weekly basis.

The base range for this position in the posted location is $186,000.00 - $255,200.00 however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The compensation package includes medical, dental, vision, disability, 401K, PTO and/or other benefits.
