Responsibilities
- Organize and perform survey field work to ensure efficiency, accuracy, and adherence to project requirements.
- Conduct topographical, boundary, high definition scanning, and construction staking surveys for a variety of project types.
- Interpret construction plans and apply them accurately in the field to support layout and staking activities.
- Collect electronic field data and maintain clear, accurate, and complete field notes for all assignments.
- Operate and maintain surveying equipment, including GPS and related instruments, to complete field tasks safely and effectively.
- Perform field surveying duties that do not require professional licensure, under the direction of licensed surveyors as needed.
- Assist with crew scheduling to ensure appropriate staffing and timely completion of field work.
- Support Survey CAD drafting in the office during winter or slower periods, preparing survey drawings and related documentation.
- Collaborate with project teams to support residential, municipal, land development, and industrial survey projects.
- Travel to job sites throughout Southeast Michigan, primarily in Ann Arbor and surrounding areas, to complete assigned work.
- Follow company procedures, safety guidelines, and quality standards while representing the organization professionally in the field.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Survey Crew Chief or in a closely related survey crew leadership role.
- Hands-on experience performing topographical surveys, boundary surveys, high definition scanning, and construction staking.
- Experience working on industrial, residential/subdivision, and/or municipal survey projects.
- Proficiency with Trimble GPS or similar GPS survey equipment for field data collection.
- Ability to interpret construction plans and apply them accurately in the field.
- Demonstrated ability to organize and lead survey field crews efficiently and safely.
- Competence in electronic data collection and accurate preparation of field notes.
- Working knowledge of standard surveying equipment and field procedures.
- Ability to travel to job sites throughout Southeast Michigan as required by project needs.
- Valid drivers license with a reliable means of transportation to and from job sites.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- 3 or more years of experience as a Survey Crew Chief is a strong plus.
- Experience with Survey CAD drafting for preparation of survey plans and related documentation.
- Drone technology experience for survey and mapping applications.
- 5 or more years of land surveying experience, including ALTA surveys.
- Associate degree or higher in surveying, geomatics, civil engineering technology, or a related field.
- Experience with crew scheduling and coordination across multiple projects.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality survey work.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with office and field personnel.

The role is primarily field-based, with most time spent at job sites in and around Ann Arbor and the surrounding areas of Southeast Michigan. Core hours are approximately 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with regular opportunities and expectations to work additional hours when project needs require it. Typical workweeks can range from 45 to 60 hours depending on deadlines and project scope, and overtime is paid for hours worked beyond 40 per week. During the winter season or slower periods, the Survey Crew Chief spends more time in the office supporting Survey CAD drafting and project preparation. The organization uses modern surveying technologies, including Trimble GPS and high definition scanning equipment, and may incorporate drone technology on certain projects. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $29.00 - $37.00/hr.Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job
