The Position

This is a temporary position, working up to 25 hours per week

The City of Maple Grove is seeking a Temporary Electrical & Building Inspector responsible for reviewing plans and conducts inspections for both electrical and building projects. The primary job duties of this position will be electrical permit inspections. As the Temporary Inspector, you will be part of a team that represents the City on a daily basis, conducting inspections while developing and nurturing strong relationships with a diverse group of customers. The ideal candidate will be able to prioritize responsibilities, use good judgement, act decisively, and contribute to a collaborative work environment. Work is performed independently under the general direction of the Building Official.

  • Reviews residential and commercial plans and construction documents to ensure they meetstatecodes,federalregulations, cityordinances, andreviewspermitapplications to ensure they reflect the work onsite.
  • Investigates projectsiteforconformancewithexistingconditionsas needed.
  • Reviews technical documents to verify code and safety compliance inelectronic format. Identifies life safety hazards, construction deficiencies, energy code compliance, sanitation and health hazards, and other related code issues.
  • Interprets and raises awareness of known code impacts to projects. Reviews for both prescriptive and performancebased design.
  • Reviews and recommends acceptance or denial of alternative design requests to the building official for approval.
  • Reviews deferred submittals and change documents for approval throughout the construction process, to ensure code compliance.
  • Consults withallstakeholders during construction tofacilitate theflowof information with other internalandexternal regulatory agencies.Communicatesasthesituation dictates.
  • Utilizes computer software to conduct electronic plan reviews, record and update field inspections, schedule daily activities, provide information to supervisor and to receive direction, as needed.
  • Conducts inspections of materials and methods during various stages of construction and remodeling to ensure compliance with state codes, federal regulations, city ordinance, and approved plans.Identifies life safety hazards, construction deficiencies, energy code compliance, sanitation andhealth hazards, andother related code issues.
  • Issues correction orders that may include times compliance, immediate closure, stop work orders, and citations.Documents and initiates corrective action to enforce code compliance.
  • Provides back-up field inspections for other inspectors for electrical, and for building permitted work.
  • Coordinates efforts to ensure the City of Maple Grove is an equitable, inclusive, and respectful organization and supports the City's mission, vision, and core values.
  • Demonstrates ability to understand and respect the diversity of customers and co-workers, effectively communicating with individuals whose first language may be one other than English.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  • Keeps informed of code changes and the impact of new legislation on code enforcement.

  • Researches new materials and methods of construction.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, practices, methods and techniques of conducting construction project plan review and inspections.
  • Materials and practices used in construction projects.
  • Basic mathematics including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry as applied to construction plan review and inspection work.
  • International Codes with Minnesota amendments.
  • City building codes and ordinances.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Outlook and Word.

An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.

Need to have:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Certification by the State of Minnesota as a master electrician
  • Five years of experience as an electrical inspector or five years of experience as an electrician
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain a MN Valid Driver's License.

Nice to have:

  • Specialized training in a related field
  • Experience in electrical and/or building inspection
  • Ability to obtain state delegation
  • Experience using electronic permitting and plan review such as PIMS, Permit Works, Blue Bean, ProjectDox, or others.

Environmental Conditions:

Office and field environment:

  • Exposure to computers for correspondence, e-plan review, and resulting inspections.
  • Exposure to inclement weather conditions onsite, work around heavy construction equipment and work on elevated structures.

Physical Conditions:

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time; significant walking on a daily basis; inspecting in confined spaces; climbing, stooping, kneeling and heavy lifting; general manual dexterity; adequate hearing, vision, and speech required; must be able to operate assigned equipment/vehicle.
