You will install storm, sanitary, and water systems for a reputable local contractor, working primarily in Franklin County and surrounding areas with occasional travel within a 100-mile radius. You will work as a key member of the underground crew, from trench preparation through final grade, ensuring accurate alignment, grade, and safe installation of all utility infrastructure. Responsibilities Install storm, sanitary, and water pipe to the specified line and grade according to project plans and standards. Work in trenches to set pipe, verify elevations, and ensure proper alignment throughout installation. Use pipe lasers, grade rods, and measuring tools to maintain accurate slope and grade for all pipe runs. Prepare trench bottoms and bedding to support proper pipe installation and long-term performance. Install and set structures such as manholes, catch basins, and related components. Coordinate closely with excavator operators and top men to maintain safe, efficient, and productive workflow. Perform trenching and excavation tasks as needed to support utility construction and installation. Assist with grading, backfilling, and final grade work to complete utility systems. Apply strong knowledge of trench safety and shoring systems to maintain a safe work area at all times. Follow all OSHA and job site safety standards and participate actively in maintaining a safe job site. Read and interpret blueprints, grade stakes, and layout information to guide installation activities. Support utility locating and verification efforts to avoid conflicts and ensure accurate placement of new utilities. Operate or assist with operation of equipment such as backhoes and skid steers as required by the project. Essential Skills At least 3 years of experience in underground utility installation with a focus on pipe laying. Proven ability to independently lay pipe to grade, not just assist with installation. Hands-on experience installing storm, sanitary, and water pipe systems. Proficiency using pipe lasers, grade rods, and other measuring tools for grade checking and elevation control. Strong understanding of trench safety practices and shoring systems in accordance with safety standards. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and grade stakes to guide pipe and structure placement. Experience setting manholes, catch basins, and other underground structures. Comfort working in trenches and in physically demanding construction conditions. Ability to work effectively with excavator operators, top men, and other crew members to complete tasks safely and efficiently. Willingness to join and work under union membership requirements upon hire. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with excavation, trenching, and earthworks in a heavy civil or utility construction environment. Familiarity with backhoe and skid steer operations to support utility construction activities. Experience in utility construction and utility installation, including sewer line and stormwater systems. Experience with laser alignment and laser operation for accurate pipe placement. Exposure to grading and final grade work related to underground utilities. Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship in underground installations. Ability to travel within approximately a 100-mile radius of the primary work area as project needs require. Why Work Here? You will join a longstanding, stable, and growing contractor that offers competitive union wages, a full benefits package, and direct-hire, permanent placement. The company provides consistent local work with a strong reputation in the community and clear opportunities to advance into leadership roles such as foreman. You will work within a structured union environment that supports your professional development, job security, and long-term career growth. Work Environment Work takes place on active construction sites, primarily within Franklin County and nearby areas, with occasional projects up to approximately 100 miles away. The role involves outdoor work in varying weather conditions and requires regular time spent in trenches and physically demanding environments. You will work as part of an underground utility crew alongside equipment such as excavators, backhoes, and skid steers, using tools including pipe lasers, grade rods, and other measuring devices.
