Welder Job Description This role focuses on production welding of structural steel for a wide variety of projects, including commercial, institutional, and industrial structures. You will perform MIG and flux core welding, interpret blueprints, and complete fabrication tasks at your own dedicated workstation. After an initial training period, you will work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment and consistently delivering high-quality welds in a fast-paced production setting. Responsibilities Perform production MIG and flux core welding Read and interpret basic blueprints to understand weld symbols, dimensions, and fabrication requirements for a variety of projects such as casinos, universities, and industrial plants. Set up, operate, and adjust welding equipment and wire feed systems to achieve strong, clean, and consistent welds that meet quality standards. Use tape measures, squares, and other measuring tools to verify dimensions and ensure components are cut, aligned, and welded according to specifications. Perform grinding and finishing operations on welds and steel components to remove spatter, smooth surfaces, and prepare parts for further processing or installation. Work at a dedicated welding station while coordinating with other welders and team members to meet production schedules and project deadlines. Follow written and verbal instructions from leads or supervisors to complete assigned jobs accurately and on time. Maintain a safe and organized work area, including proper handling of materials, tools, and equipment. Adhere to all safety procedures and personal protective equipment requirements, including safe lifting practices to pass and maintain lift test standards. Communicate clearly with team members and supervisors about job status, issues, or quality concerns, and participate in ongoing training as needed. Work consistent overtime as required, typically up to 50 hours per week, including additional hours after scheduled shifts. Essential Skills At least 1 year of production welding experience, preferably in a structural or fabrication environment. Proficiency in MIG welding on mild steel, including the ability to produce consistent, structurally sound welds. Experience with flux core welding processes in a production setting. Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints, including weld symbols and dimensions. Ability to accurately read and use a tape measure for layout, fit-up, and quality checks. Experience with grinding and other fabrication-related finishing tasks. Capability to work independently at a personal workstation after an initial training period. Ability to pass a lift test to safely handle and move materials and equipment as required. Ability to pass a drug test in accordance with company policy. Willingness and ability to work approximately 50 hours per week, including overtime after scheduled shifts. Strong reliability, including consistent attendance and communication with the team. Additional Skills & Qualifications Welding certificate or Associate of Arts (AA) degree in welding or a related field is a plus, but not required. Previous experience welding structural steel beams or working in a structural steel fabrication shop. Familiarity with working on a variety of projects such as commercial buildings, institutional facilities, and industrial plants. Comfort working with large steel beams, including material up to approximately 2 inches thick and over 50 feet long. Strong teamwork skills with the ability to support and collaborate with other welders in a small-shop environment. Work Environment The role is based in a small welding shop with approximately eight welders on first shift, creating a close, collaborative team atmosphere. The facility focuses on structural steel fabrication, working with large mild steel beams that can be up to about 2 inches thick and over 50 feet long. Both first and second shifts are available, with first shift running from 6:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and second shift from 4:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., and overtime typically scheduled after regular shift hours, resulting in around 50 hours of work per week. The environment is production-oriented, with limited capacity for extended on-the-job training, so prior production welding experience is important. You will have your own welding workstation and use MIG and flux core welding equipment, grinders, and standard measuring tools such as tape measures. The dress code requires long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and steel-toed boots; you should also have your own welding hood and steel-toed footwear with appropriate metatarsal protection.
