The Solid Waste & Recycling Center is seeking a team player who is excited to be part of the Landfill Department and willing to learn. Eagle County Government is looking to fill one position as an Equipment Operator I or II. Position placement will depend on experience.
The Equipment Operator I or II maintains and operates light and heavy equipment used in the daily operation of the County’s landfill, specific to established municipal solid waste landfilling practices. The Equipment Operator II performs skilled equipment operation tasks that may include, but are not limited to, stormwater controls, cell development, slope building, road maintenance, etc.
Hiring Range: Equipment Operator I: $26.01-$30.56. Equipment Operator II: $27.51-$33.01.Schedule: Rotating shifts:
- Monday – Friday: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- Tuesday – Saturday: Weekdays 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM | Saturdays 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
Essential Duties
- Operates heavy equipment for facility construction projects as well as, manages waste at the working face including pushing, separating, spreading, compacting and covering of trash, landfill road construction, leachate management, light snow plowing, and hydroseeding.
- Monitors the working area for hazardous materials when compacting trash.
- Directs traffic at the working face during daily business and relays load types to the scale attendants.
- Cleans, services and makes minor repairs to assigned equipment including complete walk around inspection checking for leaks, broken parts, and correct fluid levels; reports equipment problems to supervisor.
- Demonstrates continuous efforts to improve knowledge, skills, and abilities in regards to landfill equipment operation.
- Ensures compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and safety practices.
- Keeps in constant communication with the landfill Crew Leader.
- Maintains stormwater control best practices to include, but not limited to: ditches, culverts, outfalls, drainages, etc.
- Performs manual labor associated with daily and equipment operations.
- Required to respond to calls during off-hours if contacted by the County.
- Observes safety and security procedures, uses equipment and materials safely and reports potentially unsafe conditions.
- Serves the community by demonstrating Eagle County Government mission and core values and following relevant policies and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
Operator I Qualifications
- One (1) year of experience operating construction equipment or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
- Requires a valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.

- Performs complex equipment operations in regard to solid waste and recycling construction projects, cell development, final slope build-out, etc.
- Serves as the lead operator in the absence of the landfill Crew Leader.
- Assists the landfill Crew Leader with the training of equipment operators on proper procedures and methods.
- Performs manual labor associated with daily and equipment operations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Operator II Qualifications
- Two (2) years of experience operating landfill and construction equipment or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
- Requires a valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
- May be required to obtain additional certifications depending on the area(s) of assignment.
