Pay Range: The entry pay range for this position is $22.14-$26.79 per hour, based on qualifications & experience
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 6:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.; Occasional Non-standard hours, including weekends and overtime

JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, the Mechanic I performs skilled mechanical work to maintain and repair small engines and equipment. The employee completes mechanical repair, overhaul, and maintenance on equipment. The employee also maintains a clean and orderly work area.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Performs maintenance inspections and services, adjusts, and lubricates motor vehicles and small engines.
  2. Assists in cleaning and maintaining orderly work areas in the City garage. Cleans, preserves, and safeguards mechanical tools and equipment used in daily work.
  3. Performs general overhaul and repair work on gasoline engines, and related equipment.
  4. Disassembles, assembles, and repairs engines.
  5. Repairs, services, and maintains automobiles and other motor vehicles assigned to all City departments. Overhauls engines, excluding machining of parts. Repairs and installs fuel pumps, alternators, ignition components, and carburetors. Aligns front ends, balances wheels, and installs bushings, ball joints, tie-rod ends, and idler arms.
  6. Inspects, adjusts, and replaces automotive components, including valves, pistons, connecting rods, brakes, and cooling, fuel, and exhaust system components.
  7. Replaces bearings, hydraulic drives, instrument panels, and other defective parts. Tunes and adjusts equipment to proper operating standards.
  8. Repairs and overhauls brakes, ignition system wiring, transmissions, clutch assemblies, differentials, and rear axle assemblies. Tunes engines using standardized testing equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  1. Demonstrates knowledge of standard practices and equipment used in the automotive mechanic trade.
  2. Understands the operation of gasoline and diesel engines and performs mechanical repairs on a wide range of vehicles, including heavy trucks and construction equipment.
  3. Applies knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions related to automotive repair work.
  4. Uses and maintains hand tools, machine tools, and related equipment for vehicle and heavy equipment repair.
  5. Understands and follows oral and written instructions, technical manuals, and repair diagrams.
  6. Diagnoses mechanical problems and determines necessary repairs.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Associate or Technical degree in a related field OR equivalent recent relevant full-time work experience (one year of full-time recent relevant work experience for every one year of college).
  2. One year of related experience.
  3. Current and valid Drivers License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Experience as a journeyman mechanic working on diesel-powered and heavy construction equipment, along with experience repairing automotive vehicles.

Dexterity for performing detailed repairs and maintenance work. The work environment involves moderate risks and discomforts that require strict safety precautions. The employee works around moving machinery, equipment, and tools and may be exposed to irritant chemicals. The use of personal protective equipment such as boots, gloves, goggles, masks, or shields is required.
