General James M. Gavin Power Plant is a 2,600-megawatt supercritical coal-fired power station in the village of Cheshire, Ohio, United States.

The Coal Equipment Operator is responsible for operating, cleaning, and maintaining equipment used in the handling of coal, lime, urea, trona, fuel oil, and other materials. This includes conveyors, pumps, blowers, heavy mobile equipment, and associated systems to ensure safe and efficient material movement throughout the plant.

Hourly Range:

Entry Level Training: $29.92

Coal Equipment Operator: $39.71 - $44.12

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Material Handling Operations

  • Operate, clean, and maintain coal unloading, conveying, stacking, and storage systems from unloading points to plant silos.
  • Perform similar tasks for lime, urea, and trona handling systems, ensuring safe and efficient transfer from unloading locations to storage tanks or silos.

Heavy Equipment Operation

  • Operate tractors, bulldozers, stacker-reclaimers, loaders, backhoes, forklifts, vacuum trucks, dump trucks, and aerial lift platforms for material movement, site maintenance, and cleanup.

Rail and Barge Operations

  • Operate railcar movers, couple/uncouple cars, set brakes, and manage switches for safe rail operations.
  • Secure coal and fuel oil barges, operate barge-moving equipment, and assist with oil spill containment and cleanup.

Preventive Maintenance & Repairs

  • Perform lubrication, cable replacements, and minor repairs on conveyors, pumps, blowers, and other material handling equipment.
  • Assist with maintenance on railroad tracks, crushers, unloaders, stackers, and electrical systems up to 4160 volts.

Inspection & Safety

  • Conduct pre-start and continuous inspections of all material handling equipment.
  • Isolate and tag equipment for cleaning, inspection, or repair, report irregularities and unsafe conditions.

Specialized Technical Tasks

  • Operate and maintain coal sampling equipment; troubleshoot and perform minor repairs.
  • Perform welding, cutting, and brazing tasks using electric arc and oxyacetylene equipment.
  • Execute basic electrical work, including wiring, testing, and minor repairs on AC/DC circuits.
  • Install and repair masonry, refractory, and insulation as needed.

Compliance & Emergency Response

  • Follow all company safety rules and environmental guidelines.
  • Participate in emergency response programs, including firefighting, first aid, and hazardous material handling.

Team Collaboration & Training

  • Direct and assist other employees; provide training as required.
  • Maintain accurate records of operations and maintenance activities.
Requirements

Education:

  • Associate degree in engineering, industrial, or energy technology; OR
  • Associate degree in another discipline with 2 years related experience; OR
  • High school diploma with 4 years related experience (or 2 years military experience).

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to work rotating shifts.
  • Ability to work additional overtime hours when required
  • Must complete required training to advance within the line of progression.

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of OSHA and environmental guidelines.
  • Ability to read and interpret prints and specifications.
  • Welding, cutting, and basic electrical troubleshooting experience.

Summary

Candidates should be comfortable operating a vehicle as part of their job responsibilities and must meet any applicable company and insurance requirements.
