Job Description

The Structural Engineer designs building structures in a variety of materials, including structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and wood. This role focuses on producing clear technical design drawings and calculations that effectively communicate design intent to clients, while learning and applying established project and company standards and procedures. Most current work is in the commercial and industrial sectors, with additional exposure to education, mixed-use, and retail projects.

Responsibilities

  • Design building structures using structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and wood, ensuring safety, code compliance, and constructability.
  • Prepare detailed technical design drawings and calculations that clearly convey structural design intent to clients and project stakeholders.
  • Use AutoCAD and other structural design software to develop plans, sections, details, and schedules for commercial and industrial projects.
  • Incorporate project and company standards, procedures, and best practices into all design work.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers and other team members, working side by side to coordinate structural solutions with architectural and other disciplines.
  • Review and interpret redlines and markups, updating drawings and models accurately and efficiently.
  • Apply knowledge of structural systems, including steel, concrete, masonry, and wood, to support diverse project types such as commercial, industrial, education, mixed-use, and retail facilities.
  • Assist in the design and detailing of structural components such as panels, rebar layouts, and connections.
  • Support the preparation of project documentation, including calculations, drawings, and design reports, for internal reviews and client submissions.
  • Utilize structural analysis tools such as STAAD and RAM to support design decisions and validate structural performance.
  • Coordinate with architectural teams to ensure structural designs integrate effectively with architectural requirements.
  • Meet project deadlines by managing tasks efficiently and, when necessary, contributing additional time as projects approach critical milestones.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of .55 years of related structural engineering work experience.
  • Bachelors degree in Structural Engineering or Architectural Engineering.
  • Experience designing structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and wood structures.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD for structural and architectural drafting and detailing.
  • Experience using structural analysis and design software such as STAAD and RAM.
  • Ability to produce clear, accurate structural drawings and calculations that communicate design intent.
  • Familiarity with structural detailing, including panels, rebar, and concrete elements.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and implement redlines and design markups.
  • Strong understanding of structural engineering principles and building systems.
  • Ability to learn and apply project and company standards and procedures.
  • Effective collaboration skills to work closely with engineers and other project team members.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality in design and documentation.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Structural Engineering or Architectural Engineering is preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.
  • Experience with Revit for structural modeling and coordination is preferred.
  • Experience working on commercial and industrial building projects.
  • Exposure to education, mixed-use, and retail projects is beneficial.
  • Experience with SDS/2 or similar structural detailing tools is a plus.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with architectural teams and understand architectural drawings.
  • Strong communication skills to explain structural concepts to clients and team members.
  • Ability to manage time and tasks effectively to meet project deadlines.

Work Environment

This role is based in an office environment, working closely and collaboratively with engineers on a daily basis. The typical schedule is an 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. shift, supporting a healthy worklife balance, with additional hours occasionally required as projects approach deadlines. The team culture emphasizes balance and flexibility, with many staff members having family commitments. The dress code is casual for day-to-day work, where jeans and golf shirts are appropriate, and shifts to business casual when clients are present in the office. Work involves regular use of design and drafting technologies such as AutoCAD, STAAD, RAM, and Revit (preferred), in a professional, team-oriented setting focused on high-quality structural design.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Lenexa, KS.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $29.56 - $37.00/hr.
