Job Description

The Project Engineer oversees all aspects of assigned projects from preconstruction through completion, ensuring they are delivered on time, within scope, and in alignment with project specifications. This role coordinates schedules, resources, and documentation while supporting scheduling, preconstruction, estimating, and project management activities. The Project Engineer may manage multiple projects simultaneously and plays a key role in heavy civil and site construction projects in a dynamic and growth-oriented environment.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and oversee all aspects of assigned projects from planning through completion.
  • Analyze drawings, specifications, and addenda to fully understand project scope and requirements.
  • Support scheduling activities by helping to develop, maintain, and monitor project schedules and milestones.
  • Assist with preconstruction activities, including reviewing plans, identifying risks, and contributing to project planning.
  • Support estimating efforts by reviewing project documents, assisting with quantity takeoffs, and contributing to cost estimates.
  • Assist project management with day-to-day coordination, communication, and documentation across project stakeholders.
  • Establish project deadlines and schedules, and help ensure that teams adhere to agreed timelines.
  • Procure materials, tools, and equipment required for project execution in coordination with project management and procurement teams.
  • Monitor and document project progress, including tracking work performed, recording changes, and maintaining accurate project records.
  • Coordinate with field and site construction teams to support efficient and safe execution of civil and utility construction activities.
  • Utilize construction management software and tools to track project data, prepare reports, and support decision-making.
  • Support multiple projects simultaneously, balancing priorities and adapting to changing project needs.

Essential Skills

  • Experience in construction, with a focus on civil and site construction.
  • At least 2+ years of experience within civil or site construction environments.
  • Knowledge of heavy civil and utility construction practices and processes.
  • Experience providing project management support in a construction setting.
  • Ability to analyze construction drawings, specifications, and addenda.
  • Strong organizational skills to establish deadlines, schedules, and project priorities.
  • Proficiency with construction management tools and software, including Procore.
  • Experience using HCSS/HeavyBid for estimating and project support.
  • Ability to coordinate materials, tools, and equipment procurement for projects.
  • Strong documentation and reporting skills to monitor and record project progress.
  • Effective communication skills to work collaboratively with office and field teams.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • History in construction management, civil construction, or related disciplines.
  • Experience supporting scheduling, preconstruction, estimating, and project management functions.
  • Familiarity with site development and heavy civil construction projects.
  • Comfort working on multiple projects at the same time while managing competing priorities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.

Work Environment

The Project Engineer works primarily in a professional office environment that supports heavy civil and site construction projects. The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. Work involves frequent use of construction management software and digital tools to coordinate project activities and maintain documentation. The culture emphasizes high-quality project delivery, collaboration between office and field teams, and service to a diverse portfolio of military, government, commercial, and residential clients across the Mid-Atlantic region.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Crofton, MD.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $31.25 - $38.46/hr.
