Job Title: Structural Designer

Job Description

The Structural Designer will design building structures in a variety of materials, including structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and wood. The role focuses on producing accurate technical design drawings and calculations that clearly communicate design intent to clients, while learning and applying established project and company standards and procedures. Most current projects are commercial and industrial, with additional exposure to education, mixed-use, and retail work.

Responsibilities

  • Design building structures using structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and wood in accordance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Develop clear and accurate structural design drawings that effectively convey design intent to clients and project stakeholders.
  • Prepare structural calculations and documentation to support design decisions and ensure structural integrity and compliance.
  • Interpret and apply project and company standards and procedures to all design work.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, working side by side to refine designs, resolve technical issues, and coordinate project details.
  • Incorporate redlines and feedback from engineers and project team members into drawings and models in a timely manner.
  • Utilize design and drafting software tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and other structural design programs to produce drawings and models.
  • Support commercial and industrial structural design projects, with potential involvement in education, mixed-use, and retail projects.
  • Coordinate with architectural and other discipline drawings to ensure structural designs integrate seamlessly with overall project requirements.
  • Maintain organized project files, drawings, and calculations to support efficient project delivery and future reference.
  • Meet project deadlines by managing workload effectively and, when necessary, working additional hours as deadlines approach.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 310 years of related structural design work experience.
  • Proficiency in structural design of steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and wood building structures.
  • Experience with Revit for building and structural modeling.
  • Experience with structural analysis and design software such as STAAD and RAM.
  • Ability to produce accurate structural calculations to support design work.
  • Strong understanding of structural design principles and building systems in commercial and industrial projects.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and coordinate architectural and structural drawings.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in drawings, models, and calculations.
  • Effective communication skills for working closely with engineers and project team members.
  • Ability to learn and apply project-specific and company-wide standards and procedures.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working on commercial and industrial projects, with exposure to education, mixed-use, or retail projects considered beneficial.
  • Familiarity with SDS/2 and Tekla for structural modeling and detailing.
  • Experience with rebar detailing and concrete-related detailing and documentation.
  • Ability to interpret and incorporate redlines from engineers and other stakeholders efficiently.
  • Experience collaborating directly with engineers in a design office environment.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and project deadlines.

Work Environment

This role is based in an office environment, working closely and side by side with engineers as part of a collaborative design team. Typical hours follow an 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. schedule, supporting a healthy worklife balance. Additional hours may be required as project deadlines approach. The dress code is casual, with jeans and golf shirts acceptable for daily work, and business casual attire expected when clients are in the office. The position involves daily use of design and drafting technologies such as AutoCAD, Revit, STAAD, RAM, and other structural design tools in a professional, team-oriented setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Lenexa, KS.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $40.00/hr.
