Sheet Metal Fabricator II
Position Overview
As a Sheet Metal Fabricator II, you will take on greater responsibility in our fabrication shop, independently performing layout, cutting, forming, assembly, and finishing of sheet metal ductwork, fittings, hangers, supports, and related components for commercial HVAC and mechanical projects. With moderate supervision, you will produce accurate, high-quality fabricated products while continuing to develop your technical skills. This mid-level role builds on foundational experience and offers continued growth through advanced training, mentorship, and clear pathways toward journeyman-level expertise in a supportive, people-first culture.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Independently perform layout, cutting, bending, forming, assembly, and finishing of sheet metal ductwork, fittings, hangers, supports, and other components according to blueprints, specifications, and SMACNA standards.
- Operate a variety of shop equipment (shears, brakes, punches, seamers, plasma cutters, roll formers, etc.) with moderate supervision.
- Fabricate more complex assemblies and custom fittings with increasing accuracy and efficiency.
- Perform material handling, parts preparation, and staging for assembly or field delivery.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment through daily housekeeping and 5S practices.
- Actively participate in daily safety briefings, job hazard analyses, and toolbox talks while strictly following all safety protocols and PPE requirements.
- Mentor and assist Sheet Metal Fabricator I team members with tasks and best practices.
- Document work, material usage, and production accurately.
- Communicate effectively with shop leadership and team members to support efficient production and on-time delivery.
Supervisory Responsibilities None (focus remains on individual technical contribution with informal mentoring of Level I fabricators).
Requirements/Qualifications
- Experience: 2-5 years in sheet metal fabrication, preferably in HVAC/ductwork; demonstrated ability to work with moderate supervision and produce quality fabricated products.
- Education: High school diploma or GED required; trade school, vocational training, or apprenticeship in sheet metal or welding strongly preferred.
- Certifications/Licenses: Valid driver's license a plus; OSHA 10-hour certification required (OSHA 30 preferred); forklift certification a plus.
- Physical Demands: Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, bend, kneel, crouch, reach overhead, and use hand/power tools for extended periods; frequent manual dexterity and physical stamina required in a shop environment.
- Work Environment/Safety: Primarily shop-based (indoor with occasional outdoor loading); exposure to noise, dust, sharp materials, and mechanical hazards; must strictly adhere to OSHA regulations, conduct hazard identification, and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and steel-toed boots at all times-safety is our top priority and non-negotiable. This is a safety-sensitive position.
