JOIN OUR TEAM AS A PLANS EXAMINER SUPERVISOR
The Building Construction Services department is actively seeking to fill the role of Plans Examiner Supervisor-Commercial. This role is a highly responsible role involving technical and supervisory work in the examination of construction plans for compliance with the County's building codes and related regulations. An employee allocated to this position reviews major construction plans for compliance with current building codes and supervises Plans Examiners for their review of construction plans. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience as a commercial plans examiner.
Essential Job Functions
Responsible for performing Technical reviews of considerable difficulty on professionally prepared documents for all proposed Commercial and Residential construction projects. Responsibilities include determining conformance with current Florida Building Codes, Land Development Codes and Statistic Statutes. Interprets and explains codes and regulations to builders, contractors, homeowners, and other interested parties. Confers with contractors, engineers, and property owners regarding disapproved items in order to obtain plan changes necessary for approval. Approves or disapproves proposed plans in accordance with the code and related regulations. Keeps operational and plans examination records and makes verbal and written reports. Supervises training and work distribution of plans examination staff. Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of Florida Building Code and fire codes.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of structural, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical trades.
- Knowledge of general construction methods and procedures.
- Ability to read, interpret, and evaluate structural, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical details of construction plans against code requirements and accepted construction practices.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County officials, contractors, architects, property owners, and the public.
- Ability to plan, organize, train, assign, supervise, and inspect the work of subordinates.
- Ability to enforce regulations with firmness and tact.
- Ability to use a computer.
- Ability to prepare clear, concise and accurate reports.
- Ability to organize information and effectively present recommendations orally and in writing.
Minimum Requirements
PHYSICAL SKILLS: Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written and visual communication. Requires operation of a motor vehicle. Requires walking, standing, and stooping.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from an accredited College or University with a Bachelors' Degree in Architecture, Building Construction, or a related field and five (5) years' of experience as a Commercial Plans Examiner OR an Associate degree and seven (7) years' of experience as a Commercial Plans Examiner OR graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency and ten (10) years' experience as a Commercial Plans Examiner. Three (3) years of supervisory experience preferred.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS: Standard Certification in accordance with Chapter 468, Florida Statutes, as a Building, Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, Plans Examiner and/or be a registered Architect or Engineer required. Must possess a valid Florida driver's license.
