Excavation Project Manager

Position Summary

The Excavation Project Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing excavation and site development projects from pre-construction

Responsibilities

Excavation Project Manager – Position Responsibilities

Project Planning & Management

* Manage excavation and site development projects from contract award through final completion.

* Develop project schedules, milestones, and production goals.

* Coordinate manpower, equipment, materials, and subcontractors.

* Review plans, specifications, permits, contracts, and engineering documents.

* Identify project risks and develop mitigation strategies.

Financial Management

* Prepare and monitor project budgets.

* Track job costs, labor production, equipment utilization, and material expenses.

* Review and approve invoices from suppliers and subcontractors.

* Manage change orders, RFIs, and pay applications.

* Forecast project profitability and cash flow.

Field Operations

* Work closely with superintendents and foremen to ensure efficient operations.

* Coordinate earthwork, grading, utility installation, road construction, and site development activities.

* Monitor daily production and project progress.

* Ensure equipment and labor resources are properly allocated.

* Resolve field issues quickly to minimize delays.

Client & Stakeholder Communication

* Serve as the primary point of contact for owners, developers, engineers, inspectors, and subcontractors.

* Attend project meetings and provide progress updates.

* Maintain positive relationships with clients and regulatory agencies.

* Communicate schedule changes, delays, and project challenges.

Safety & Compliance

* Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety policies.

* Promote a strong safety culture among crews and subcontractors.

* Conduct site visits and safety audits.

* Ensure proper trench safety, utility locating, and excavation procedures are followed.

* Maintain project documentation required by regulatory agencies.

Quality Control

* Verify work is completed according to plans, specifications, and contract requirements.

* Coordinate inspections and testing.

* Address deficiencies and corrective actions promptly.

* Ensure project deliverables meet company quality standards.

Administrative Responsibilities

* Process contracts, subcontracts, purchase orders, and change orders.

* Maintain project files and documentation.

* Prepare weekly and monthly project reports.

* Review daily reports and production tracking.

* Manage project closeout documentation and warranties.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

* Project profitability

* Schedule performance

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

* 3–10+ years of experience in excavation, site development, underground utilities, grading, or heavy civil construction.

* Strong understanding of:

* Earthwork and mass grading

* Utility installation (water, sewer, storm drain)

* Road construction

* Site development

* Erosion and sediment control

* Ability to read and interpret:

* Civil plans

* Survey data

* Engineering drawings

* Specifications and contracts

* Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously.

* Knowledge of construction scheduling software such as Microsoft Project, Primavera P6, or similar.

* Experience with project budgeting, cost tracking, forecasting, and change orders.

* Understanding of OSHA safety regulations and excavation safety requirements.

* Strong subcontractor and vendor management skills.

* Excellent communication and leadership abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

* Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field (or equivalent field experience).

* Experience with GPS machine control systems (Trimble, Topcon, Leica).

* Knowledge of estimating and bidding processes.

* Experience with public works, DOT, municipal, federal, or commercial projects.

* OSHA 30 Certification.

* CPR/First Aid Certification.

Key Responsibilities

* Manage excavation and sitework projects from pre-construction through completion.

* Develop and maintain project schedules.

* Coordinate field crews, subcontractors, suppliers, and inspectors.

* Track production, costs, budgets, and project profitability.

* Review contracts and ensure compliance with project specifications.

* Process RFIs, submittals, pay applications, and change orders.

* Conduct project meetings and maintain client relationships.

* Ensure all work is completed safely, on time, and within budget.
