Job Description
This Mechanical Engineer role focuses on the design and execution of HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems for a wide range of building types, including commercial, healthcare, educational, industrial, and municipal facilities. You will develop practical, cost-effective engineering solutions for projects ranging from tenant improvements to highly complex facilities such as laboratories and data centers. This position suits someone who thrives in a collaborative, client-facing environment, enjoys variety in project work, and wants meaningful ownership in design decisions and direct interaction with clients.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop mechanical systems, including air distribution, hydronic systems, and performing detailed load calculations.
- Design plumbing systems that meet project requirements, applicable codes, and client expectations.
- Design fire protection systems that align with safety standards and project specifications.
- Perform engineering calculations, system sizing, and equipment selection to ensure efficient and reliable operation.
- Prepare complete construction documents, including drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
- Evaluate multiple mechanical system options and provide cost-effective design recommendations tailored to client needs.
- Collaborate closely with internal electrical engineers and external stakeholders such as architects, owners, and contractors.
- Support renovation, retrofit, and new construction projects across varying levels of size and complexity.
- Participate in site visits and field investigations to verify existing conditions and support design decisions.
- Contribute to construction administration activities, including responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and supporting field coordination.
- Assist with commissioning efforts and system performance verification to ensure installed systems operate as designed.
- Ensure all designs comply with applicable building codes, ASHRAE standards, and other relevant industry standards.
- Incorporate energy-efficient design practices and sustainability considerations into mechanical system solutions.
- Use Revit and AutoCAD to produce accurate, coordinated mechanical drawings and models.
- Communicate clearly with clients and team members, presenting technical information in an understandable way and contributing to a positive, collaborative project environment.
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
- 310+ years of experience in MEP consulting or building systems design.
- Proven experience designing HVAC systems for commercial, healthcare, educational, or industrial facilities.
- Proficiency in Revit for mechanical system modeling and documentation.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD for mechanical drafting and design coordination.
- Strong understanding of building codes and ASHRAE standards.
- Solid grasp of energy-efficient design practices for building systems.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work directly with clients and multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to develop practical, buildable engineering solutions.
- Experience using core mechanical design tools and workflows, including mechanical design, engineering calculations, and drafting.
- Ability to use CAD tools and related software in an architectural or engineering environment.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred, or active progress toward obtaining licensure.
- Experience with complex systems such as laboratories, data centers, or institutional facilities.
- Exposure to commissioning activities or system performance verification.
- Familiarity with energy modeling tools or participation in sustainability initiatives.
- Experience working on both small renovation projects and large, complex building systems.
- Background or exposure to architectural coordination and multidisciplinary design environments.
- Experience with additional mechanical design and CAD tools such as SolidWorks is a plus.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining high-quality design output.
- Interest in continuous learning, mentorship, and professional growth within a collaborative engineering team.
You will work in a collaborative MEP consulting environment with a tight-knit team of experienced engineers who emphasize practical, buildable, and cost-effective solutions. The role involves regular use of Revit, AutoCAD, and other mechanical design and CAD tools to develop coordinated construction documents. Project work spans commercial, healthcare, educational, industrial, municipal, and complex facilities such as laboratories and data centers, giving you exposure to both small renovations and large, sophisticated systems. The environment is client-focused and encourages direct interaction with owners, architects, and contractors, providing clear visibility, mentorship, and faster growth than typically found in large corporate settings. Work is primarily office-based with periodic site visits and field investigations at project locations. The culture values innovation, reliability, and delivering high-quality designs on time and within budget, with stable project flow and strong long-term growth potential.
