This is an opportunity to serve the Department programs by delivering technical and professional services that create and maintain the assets under Department care.

We are seeking candidates to assist others in maintaining grounds safety and agency assets by performing various general semi-skilled manual labor that support various trades such as carpenters, equipment operators, welders, and mechanics.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, this position will:

Site Clearing and Site Safety Securing.

  • Cleans up rubble and debris and removes trash and materials.
  • Digs and backfill ditches and trenches, cuts, and removes woody debris, grounds restoration, and cleans barrier dams.
  • Maintains a clean job site, mowing, weed eating, clipping removal.
  • Picks up tools, equipment, and secures job site each day to eliminate potential hazards.
  • Sets up traffic cones, barricades, warning ribbons and any other devices as directed to ensure site and yard safety.
  • Monitor site conditions and report to management any potential unsafe conditions. Participate in making site safe as instructed by management.

Equipment and Power Tool Operation.

  • Operates motorized vehicles such as trucks and trailer combination to transport equipment, supplies, and materials.
  • Operates hand and power tools, weed eater, leaf blower, chain saw, welder, plate compactors, and set-up/break down of portable trash pumps.
  • Loads, unloads, and moves supplies, materials, or equipment to a from the work site using forklifts, backhoes and flat-bed trucks or trailers.

Maintenance and Construction Support.

  • Performs various general construction support tasks.
  • Cuts pipe, plate and other materials. Assists in the installation of pipe, valves, gates, and signage.
  • Assists resident shop-based staff in general day-to-day maintenance tasks such as (but not limited to) emptying trash cans, sweeping floors, sorting recyclable packing and shipping materials into appropriate bins, sorting junk pallets and organizing/returning core pallets to vendor.
  • Minds and maintains general stockpile and on-site supplies of various construction materials as directed.
  • Receives and stores material and general vendor deliveries.
  • Picks up and transports/delivers parts, materials and small equipment.

Working Conditions:

Work setting: Duties are performed at construction sites on hatchery and wildlife areas in construction staging yard, truck shop, and in the pump shop. This position may involve working in or near water, including tasks that require navigating, negotiating, and performing duties related to water environments. Bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, and lifting of 50 pounds repetitively when loading and unloading trucks or moving materials around project site. Some tasks will involve working on a computer.

Schedule: These positions will work 6:00 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday-Thursday, and overtime as needed. This will include occasional overnight stays.

Travel requirements: Travel required 20-30% depending on season.

Customer Interactions: Frequent but limited interactions varying between Federal, Local, Inter-Agency, and Intra-Agency customers and vendors.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent.

And

Two (2) years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction, or repair work, or similarly related field.

Experience in/with:

  • Using and caring for hand and power tools with reasonable degree of skill, work safely.
  • Performing work from oral and written instructions.
  • Reading and interpreting, sketches, ordering parts, materials, and equipment.
  • Operating equipment and materials used in servicing and maintaining vehicles, construction and water pumping equipment; methods, tools, and materials used in servicing and maintaining equipment.
  • Using a computer and performing basic navigation of Word, Excel and Microsoft Outlook.
  • Communicating clearly and succinctly both verbally and in writing.

License: Valid drivers license recognized in the state of Washington and acceptable driving record.

Special Requirement/Condition of Employment:

Successful completion of agency training and/or certification per supervisory direction, position need, and training availability.

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:

  • Experience in the use of hand tools and equipment commonly used by grounds keepers.
  • Experience driving/operating trucks and vans up to 550 class.
  • Experience towing and maneuvering trailers behind a tow vehicle.
  • Experience tying-down/securing goods and materials on a transport truck.
