Summary of Position:

The Research Project Manager (RPM) will support a range of health services research studies of the Center for Learning Health System Sciences (CLHSS). They will be responsible for the management of assigned research projects and will interface and coordinate work with IT, clinical, and academic stakeholders. The RPM will work closely with faculty and staff from project intake and project kick-off through project execution and completion by establishing scope, work plans and timelines, managing resources, assessing risk, building contingency plans, and resolving issues.

The ideal candidate will be proactive, able to anticipate needs, and thrive with limited guidance from their supervisor. The successful candidate will have strong technical, organization, project management, and communication (written and oral) skills to guide multi-disciplinary teams and ensure deliverables are timely and meet requirements. This position also requires a high tolerance for ambiguity and a willingness to research and develop solutions to varied, nondescript problems.

Duties/Responsibilities

90%: Health Services Research Project Management

  • Develop and implement comprehensive project plans for assigned health services research studies, incorporating scope and output, resource plans, landmarks, accountabilities, risk mitigation strategies and communication plan and timelines
  • Provide regular status reporting on plan progress and key project success metrics
  • Identify and align project resource requirements to continuously evaluate project progress and identify potential risks and issues, developing contingency plans and corrective actions as needed to deliver on project commitments and ensure successful project delivery
  • Given subject matter expertise, assist evaluation of project requests during science assessment to evaluate feasibility, innovation, and alignment with center goals; support statement of work development for projects under review
  • Effectively manage interest holder expectations and cross-organizational project dependencies to ensure ownership and success; maintain effective communication strategies and proactive status reporting with interest holders
  • Coordinate resources internal to CLHSS and external including those provided by other UMN departments and partner organizations (e.g. Fairview IT)
  • Partner with the health system business partners, including the Learning Health System Program Manager, Fairview and other health system staff including IT project managers, and other individual(s) working on projects (this may include patients and health systems outside of Minnesota) for implementation of research projects in healthcare settings
  • Plan agendas and lead regular meetings with research teams to establish priorities, check progress, identify and resolve issues including distribution of updates and ensuring next steps are completed on schedule

5%: Research Dissemination

  • Contribute to the development of publications and presentations of findings to collaborators, including healthcare providers, policymakers, and the scientific community to establish significance in the area of research

5%: CLHSS Operational Management

  • Promote CLHSS services and engagement opportunities within UMN and across partner organizations to connect LHS resources with healthcare delivery improvement ideas/projects
  • Engage with CLHSS project management team to uphold project management standards, templates, and resources, as well as share best practices and new strategies in research project management
  • Other tasks as assigned

Work Arrangements:

This position follows UMN Work. With Flexibility. guidelines. Currently, the position will be primarily working from home. There may be occasional needs to be on campus and over time there may be a need to set a regular schedule for a few days on campus each week. Work hours should follow a consistent, contiguous 8-hour schedule between 7-5, M-F.

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS with at least 5 years of experience, or a Graduate degree with at least 3 years of experience, or a combination of related education and work experience equal to nine years.
  • Strong analytical skills with established organization and project management strategies to keep track of details in the context of the larger objectives and manage multiple responsibilities and projects
  • Ability to work independently, as a part of a team, and with changing priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects, set and maintain deadlines, prioritize assignments, proactively problem-solve
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with clinical and/or translational research
  • Experience with regulatory aspects (e.g. IRB and FDA) of conducting clinical research
  • University of Minnesota experience
  • HIPAA & CITI Training
  • Experience working on a multi-disciplinary team
  • Healthcare experience or experience working in a healthcare system
  • Experience working on federally funded projects
  • Masteras degree or project management certification
  • Proactive, self-starting work ethic
