Lead and manage a team of 35 Civil Engineers conducting plan reviews of capital projects for impacts to SPU-owned water, wastewater, and drainage infrastructure
Assign and prioritize workloads to balance team capacity, meet deadlines, and maintain consistent quality across reviews and deliverables
Review construction plans and submittals for compliance with Seattles stormwater code, SPU standards, and City specifications
- Coordinate with City departments, external agencies, and project teams to align design reviews, identify infrastructure impacts, and scope or review improvements to SPU assets
- Participate in public meetings and interdepartmental discussions on current and proposed projects
- Serve as a technical subject matter expert on Seattle Standard Specifications and Plans, and lead the development and application of SPUs Design Standards and Guidelines
- Track and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor team performance and support continuous process improvement
- Coach, mentor, and develop engineering staff to foster technical excellence and career growth
- Be a strong advocate for SPU in interagency coordination efforts, often navigating conflicting interests to protect critical infrastructure and align with citywide goals
Education: Equivalent to a bachelors degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in engineering, accounting, business administration, construction management, public policy, or a related field.
ANDExperience : Six (6) years of professional civil engineering experience, including two years of supervisory experience .
Experience/Education Equivalency : In lieu of a Bachelors Degree in an accredited program, four (4) additional years of civil engineering work experience under the supervision of a licensed engineer may be substituted. There is no equivalency for the PE license.
Desired Experience:
- Experience designing water, wastewater and stormwater systems
- Experience with utility protection during construction, including settlement monitoring, temporary supports, dewatering impacts, etc.
- Experience negotiating agreements between agencies
- Familiarity and experience with the Seattle Standard Specifications and Plans, and the SPU Design Standards Guidelines
- Strong communications skills, both written and verbal, as applied in technical roles
- People leadership with a track record of mentoring and developing staff
License, Certification and Other Requirements:
- Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington
- Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility
- Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment
- Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances and work in or near construction sites
- May be required to lift over 50 pounds
- May be required to stand, bend, or walk for extended periods of time
- May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays
- Overnight travel might be required
This position allows for the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. Effective January 2025, City employees will have the option to work remotely two days a week. Individual schedules will be agreed u pon by the employee and their supervisor.

The full salary range for this position is: $78.35 - $90.85 Hourly
