UPMC Mercy is hiring a Full Time Carpenter to support our facility!

This position will work during the daylight shift from 7am-3pm with rotating weekends.

Purpose:
To construct, repair and maintain all forms of carpentry work within the health system.

Responsibilities:

  • Construct, repair and maintain wooden structures such as furniture, equipment, partitions, and other parts of hospital buildings. Works from blueprints, drawings, or oral instructions being conscious of safety hazards and cost containment efforts.
  • Calculate quantity of materials needed and requisitions lumber, hardware, and other supplies. Select stock, tools, and supplies such as nails, screws, and glue to repair wooden structures. Remove and replace broken or rusted hardware. Repair partition, doors, windows, floor, furniture and building framework, using power tools such as a planer, sander, saws and drills or hand tools such as planes, chisels, rasps, and saws.
  • Read blueprints or specifications to determine procedure of constructing cabinets, furniture, partitions, and other wooden articles. Measure and mark in prescribed dimensions on wooden stock using rules, tape measure, calipers, compass and marking pencil to guide cutting operations.
  • Assemble wooden pieces using glue, nails, and screws in building such items as stands, display racks and instrument and equipment cases. Install floorboards and coverings, such as linoleum and asphalt on vinyl tile and cove base. Construct casework and counter tops using plastic laminates, melamine, and vinyl clad board.
  • Build or repair fire-rated wall partitions, door jams and all forms of gypsum or acoustical ceilings. Erect sound partitions with metal studs, insulation, and drywall.
  • May replace glass windows or ceiling tile; builds scaffolding and cement forms; assists other craftsmen in handling materials on major repair or installation projects. Perform all forms of demolition and removal of construction material and debris from job site. Perform minor excavating for forms and footers.
  • Responsible for maintaining master key system and all duties related to locks and security. Re-key locks and install, mortise, cylindrical, electric and combination type locksets. Responsible for duplication of all keys. Responsible for assuring proper use of key control policies and attaining proper authorization for any change or alteration to a lock or duplication of a key.
  • Maintain or install all types of hardware pertaining to a door or fire egress (etc., door closures, panic devices, hinges, electric latches, coordinators, etc.).
  • Prepare daily and time sheets and various written reports as requested. Must carry a provided work phone while on site. Responsible for cleanup and removal of carpenter's equipment and supplies from work areas.
  • Must be able to rotate all shifts, weekends, and holiday work schedules.
  • Must be able to move 50lbs. Must possess the ability to move throughout the facility's various buildings, roofs, tunnels, and confined spaces. Must be able to perform all forms of appropriate maintenance work or repairs on various forms of ladders, scaffolds, man-lifts, and safety equipment in order to complete work assignments at extreme heights. Good knowledge of locks, keys, and master systems.
