Job Description
Department of Public Works - Mechanic Job Description: We are seeking a
skilled and experienced individual to join our team as a Skilled
Equipment Mechanic & Operator. This role involves performing advanced
maintenance and repair tasks on motorized equipment as well as operating
heavy machinery essential to municipal operations. Hours are Monday
through Thursday, 6:30am-3:30pm and Friday 6:30am-12:30pm. Key
Responsibilities: -Diagnose and repair gasoline and diesel-powered
vehicles and equipment, including inspections and troubleshooting.
-Perform engine tune-ups, brake and clutch adjustments, and electrical
system repairs. -Replace or adjust carburetors and conduct front-end
alignments. -Remove and replace clutches, transmissions, and faulty
engine components. -Disassemble, overhaul, and rebuild gasoline and
diesel engines. -Conduct valve grinding, engine overhauls, and related
maintenance tasks. -Perform auto bodywork, welding, and metal repairs.
-Execute preventative maintenance, including lubrication, oil filter
replacement, and related tasks. -Supervise and provide guidance to a
small team of less experienced workers. Equipment Operation: -Operate
heavy machinery, including trucks (rated over 9 tons), tractors,
semi-trailers, and truck-trailer combinations. -Use specialized
equipment such as rollers, rotary snow plows, mobile highway graders,
bituminous spreaders, and tar distributors. -Handle hoisting equipment,
including backhoes, cranes, power shovels, trench diggers, pile drivers,
front-end loaders, street sweepers, and catch basin machines. Additional
Duties: -Load and unload trucks, haul materials, and assist with plowing
and sanding highways during inclement weather. Qualifications:
-Proficiency in repairing and maintaining gasoline and diesel-powered
engines. -Ability to operate a wide range of heavy equipment and
machinery. -Possession of a Class I License from the Registry of Motor
Vehicles and a Class 4 license as defined by the Massachusetts
Department of Public Safety. \*Strong organizational skills and the
