Head School Bus Mechanic

Reports To: Director of Transportation / Transportation Supervisor

Job Summary:

The Head School Bus Mechanic plans, directs, and supervises all aspects of the maintenance and repair of the school district's fleet of school buses and other vehicles. This position requires a strong understanding of diesel and gasoline engines, hydraulic and air brake systems, electrical systems, and preventative maintenance programs. The Head Mechanic also leads and mentors other mechanics, ensuring compliance with all safety regulations and departmental standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Supervision and Leadership:

  • Oversees the daily operations of the bus garage, including scheduling, assigning tasks, and supervising other mechanics.
  • Provides technical guidance, training, and mentorship to junior mechanics.
  • Evaluates mechanic performance and conducts performance reviews.
  • Fosters a safe and productive work environment.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Transportation on staffing and operational improvements.

Vehicle Maintenance and Repair:

Diagnoses complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues on school buses and other district vehicles (e.g., vans, trucks, lawn mowers, forklifts).

Performs major and minor repairs, including engine overhauls, transmission replacements, brake system repairs, suspension work, and electrical troubleshooting.

Conducts comprehensive inspections to ensure vehicles meet all federal, state, and local safety regulations (e.g., DOT requirements).

Develops and implements a robust preventative maintenance program to minimize downtime and extend vehicle lifespan.

Responds to road calls for disabled vehicles and performs emergency repairs in the field.

Maintains tools and equipment in the shop, ensuring they are in good working order and promoting safety.

Administrative and Record-Keeping:

Maintains accurate and detailed records of all vehicle repairs, maintenance, inspections, parts inventory, and warranty information.

Assists in the preparation of the departmental budget for maintenance and repairs.

Utilizes diagnostic software and other computer programs for vehicle analysis and record keeping.

Prepares various reports as required by the Director of Transportation or regulatory agencies.

Safety and Compliance:

Ensures all work is performed in accordance with established safety procedures and regulations.

Monitors and ensures compliance with environmental regulations related to hazardous material storage and disposal.

Stays up-to-date on new technologies, repair techniques, and safety standards in the transportation industry.

Collaboration and Communication:

Communicates effectively with bus drivers, transportation staff, and school administration regarding vehicle status, repair timelines, and safety concerns.

Coordinates with outside vendors for specialized repairs or parts as needed.

Assist in developing bus specifications for new vehicle purchases.

Education:

High School Diploma or GED required.

Completion of a certified diesel mechanic program or equivalent vocational training preferred.

ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications, especially in school bus or heavy-duty truck repair, are highly desirable.

Experience:

Minimum of 5-7 years of progressively responsible experience as a school bus or heavy-duty truck mechanic, with significant experience in diagnosing and repairing complex mechanical issues.

Previous supervisory or lead mechanic experience preferred.

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements is typically required or must be obtained within a specified timeframe.

Air brake endorsement required.

State inspection certificate may be required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Physical Demands:

Frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb.

Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds frequently, and occasionally up to 100 pounds with assistance.

Manual dexterity and vision sufficient to work in, around, and under vehicles safely and efficiently.

Ability to work in various weather conditions and environments, including noisy and sometimes dirty conditions.

May be required to be "on call" for emergency breakdowns.
