The Gang Foreman Training Program is approximately six months in duration and will include both classroom and on-the-job training. Trainees are required to demonstrate competency under all situations. Satisfactory completion of the training program will result in the trainee becoming a qualified Gang Foreman. Upon successful completion of the training program, the employee is required to remain in the Sub-department (i.e. Substations) for a minimum of 24 months from the date of the completion of the training program. All Gang Foremen are on probation for 18 months. A Gang Foreman is required to plan, lead and coordinate the work of employees which may include install, maintain and repair substation facilities, including A.C. switches, batteries, circuit breakers, supervisory system, relays, rectifiers, and generators. Responsible for the safe and economical use of labor, materials, equipment and are required to ensure that company policy is adhered to and for ensuring the safety and well-being of all employees under their jurisdiction.

WORK PERFORMED:

  1. Take all necessary steps to maintain safe, reliable train service and to restore interrupted service and vital systems in the most effective manner.

  2. Plan and monitor the execution of construction or maintenance projects to ensure safe, satisfactory workmanship, elimination of unnecessary overtime, and that the work progresses promptly; and coordinate when other departments are involved.

  3. Conduct safety observations (SAFERS).

  4. Ensure safety meetings are held on schedule and all issues are addressed.

  5. Participate in investigations of on-the-job accidents for cause and prevention.

  6. Administer progressive testing and evaluations for newly hired employees (i.e., pole climbing).

  7. Prepare material charge outs with accurate and concise information.

  8. Monitor material to help reduce inventory.

  9. Complete time and labor reports for members of assigned gang.

  10. Maintain a daily log of all gang activities.

  11. Secure a daily log of all tools issued to gang trucks.

  12. Monitor vehicle usage forms.

  13. Respond to emergency call out.

  14. Be available for programmed work.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent (GED) approved by a State's Department of Education or recognized accredited organization.
  • Internal candidates must have completed three years of LIRR service with related electrical experience and have worked within the Substation department for the past three years.
  • Demonstrated willingness to assume and handle responsibilities. Ability to demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills.
  • Required to participate and attend "MECC Training Program", in addition to other classes identified to assist in the enhancement of supervisory skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in Power operations with respect to the movement of trains.
  • Must be a qualified substation mechanic and successfully qualified as a supervisory control maintainer.

85% Rate of Pay $48.71

87% Rate of Pay $49.86

90% Rate of Pay $51.58

93% Rate of Pay $53.30

100% Rate of Pay $57.31

Other Information

In addition to meeting the minimum requirements of the position, the selection process may include, but is not limited to a pre-screening assessment (i.e., physical, written and/ or practical evaluation) and interview. Candidates forfeit further consideration in the process if they fail to participate in any step of the process when scheduled. Make up dates/times will not be given. In addition, LIRR employee applicants must be in their current position for the 12 months immediately preceding the close date of this posting and must possess a satisfactory work history, including attendance and discipline record. A record of more than ten sick days without medical documentation in two of the last three years is considered unsatisfactory attendance. Not all qualified applicants are guaranteed an interview due to the competitive selection process. A background investigation, medical examination, and safety sensitive drug/alcohol test may also be required.
