The Pacific Northwest's premier steel fabricator, Thompson Metal Fab, Inc., is in immediate need of skilled and experienced Fitters / Fabricators / Welders. Serving the Civil, Hydro, Oil & Gas, and custom fabrication industries. We are an AISC, API, ASME, and WABO certified facility. **Job Summary:**
The Prefab Machine Operator is responsible for operating a variety of steel processing machines to support fabrication work. This includes tasks such as cutting, forming, and preparing materials using equipment like the Cutting Tables, Beamlines, Press Brakes, Rolls, and Saws. Operators are expected to work safely, follow shop drawings and cut lists, and contribute to team goals through quality work and communication.
**Key Responsibilities:**
Operate assigned steel processing machines in accordance with standard operating procedures and safety expectations.
Collaborate with the Prefab Foreman to confirm material type and ensure all relevant markings and part records are completed accurately.
Read and interpret shop drawings, cut sheets, and nesting information.
Check completed work against drawings and cut sheets to verify accuracy and completeness.
Perform basic machine setup, calibration, and routine operator-level maintenance checks.
Understand and adjust machine parameters such as speed, feed rate, and tolerances.
Safely operate overhead cranes and work around large, heavy materials and machinery.
Communicate effectively with the Prefab Foreman and team to complete tasks efficiently and maintain workflow.
Support team efforts to reduce process time, improve work methods, and maintain a clean, organized work area.
Follow all established safety procedures and report any hazards or malfunctions immediately.
Perform other related duties as assigned to support department and production needs.
**Qualifications:**
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Minimum of 1 year of experience operating fabrication or steel processing equipment required.
Familiarity with heavy plate and structural materials used in large, complex fabrication.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, cut sheets, and material layouts.
Working knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
Understanding of basic computer use and interface with machine controls or production tracking systems.
Must be able to stand for 8+ hours, lift up to 50 lbs, and perform physical work including kneeling, crouching, climbing, and working in tight spaces.
Must be able to work in environments with exposure to heat, cold, noise, fumes, and odors while wearing required PPE.
