Knowledge of:
The basic welding process, including the different types of welding materials (welding rods), tools, and their proper usage.
Basic mathematics such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, interpreting angles, taking measurements, and computing circumferences.
The basic welding positions such as flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead.
The different types of welding such as metallic arc welding, Oxyacetylene TIG (gas tungsten arc welding), MIG (metal inert gas arc welding), and cast iron.
The appropriate welding machine settings required to operate the machine.
Safety policies and procedures, and applicable agency requirements such as proper clothing and eye shields used during welding.
Arc gouging, brazing, silver soldering.
Skill to:
Perform basic welding.
Use basic welding tools such as shears, wrenches, drills, and hammers.
Operate an oxygen/acetylene welding and burning torch.
Perform bending, drilling, and grinding operations.
Operate assigned equipment.
Drive a single-axle manual shift truck.
Ability to:
Read and calculate angles, measurements, and circumferences.
Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, drawings, and work orders.
Communicate effectively with others.
Work under various work conditions such as heights, depths, and close quarters.
Perform moderate to heavy lifting of objects; pull, climb, carry, and operate equipment and tools associated with the welding process.
Maintain physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, and/or walking for prolonged periods of time.
Work in varying weather conditions, slippery or uneven surfaces or noise.
Perform work climbing at elevated heights.
PROMOTIONAL : Each applicant must have two years of experience as a Welder Helper with the City of Cincinnati.
OPEN : Each applicant must have two years of experience as a full-time Welder in the last five years or have successfully completed a vocational or technical welding program (must provide documentation).
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Must have a valid Driver's License.
Public Services Department requires a Commercial Driver's License Class A be obtained prior to the end of the probationary period.
General manual dexterity required; audiovisual and linguistic acuity required.
MILITARY EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE EVALUATION
Military education and experience may be substituted for college level course work at the lower and upper division baccalaureate and graduate levels and apprenticeship training at the vocational certificate level on a case by case basis based on the American Council on Education (ACE) Military Guide recommendations.
