Job Summary:

The primary responsibility of the Trencher Operator is to perform one-pass trenching operations, complete the setup, installation, removal, and teardown of one-pass trenching systems at jobsites, and to oversee mobilization and demobilization to and from jobsites. The Trencher Operator is responsible for the timely and safe completion of projects to spec, as well as Trenching Machine operations and maintenance. The Trencher Operator will complete projects as directed by a Trenching Foreperson or Operations Manager. The Trenching Operator will serve as a working leader and individual contributor to the overall team’s success.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Complete jobsite walks with a Trencher Operator II and/or superintendent prior to starting work to ensure proper understanding of project requirements and spec; maintain open communication regarding changes to ensure the trenching activities meet project requirements
  • Enroll in Mersino’s Trencher Machine certification program and operate the trencher under the supervision of a Trencher Operator II to learn about operation and how to load/unload the Trenching Machine
  • Prepare and submit daily trenching reports and daily trenching logs under supervision of a Trencher Operator II
  • Stock and maintain all required tools in sock trucks to ensure adequate availability on projects
  • Ensure trenching run lengths are measured and recorded throughout operations and confirm that proper information is logged for billing
  • Conduct daily visual checks and weekly documented inspections, to ensure the Trenching Machine and Yanmar remain in optimal working condition at all times; oversee and/or perform Trenching Machine and Yanmar maintenance as required including hardfacing welding
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of soil types, classifications, and depths; have full knowledge on how to read prints to be able to complete trenching activities safely and efficiently
  • Identify locates and ensure the underground utilities safety processes and procedures are followed at all times ; partner with sales or the Operations Manager to ensure an underground utility waiver is secured anytime trenching is to be performed outside of marked locates
  • Ensure proper set up and tear down of equipment and systems for assigned projects
  • Load, unload and transport materials and equipment to/from job sites
  • Move and/or maintain pumps, compressors, generators, hoses, and other equipment, ensuring to utilize proper rigging, lift, and suspended load procedures
  • Complete minor repairs of equipment on site as well as preventive maintenance on assigned vehicles or equipment and as required
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain pumps, compressors, generators, hoses, and other equipment, ensuring to utilize proper rigging, lift, and suspended load procedures
  • Ensure safe refueling activities are completed for equipment on site
  • Clean, organize and maintain jobsites, yard and shop areas as required
  • Adhere to applicable company and regulatory agency environmental, health and safety standards; ensure safe work practices at all times
  • Ensure all policies and procedures outlined in the Fleet Safety Program , including DOT requirements, are followed when driving a company vehicle
  • Assist in completing site safety activities such as JSA’s, safety observations, incident reports, etc.
  • Maintain and complete all necessary paperwork per company policy
  • Enroll in an OSHA 30 certification course
  • Complete a First Aid/CPR certification course
  • Ensure that The Mersino Way is a guiding document in all daily activities
  • Perform other tasks and duties as requested

Qualifications:

  • 6-9+ months of experience as a Trencher Technician II
  • 1.5-2 years of experience in one-pass trenching field operations preferred
  • Comprehensive knowledge of trenching systems, installation and maintenance preferred
  • Valid CDL-A license without airbrakes and a clean driving record
  • Ability to obtain a CDL-A license with airbrakes
  • Valid DOT medical card
  • Competent person certification for hard facing welding
  • OSHA 10 Certification
  • Rigging & Signalperson Certification
