Facilities Field Supervisor

This position plays a key leadership role in maintaining Gallatin Countys facilities. As the lead technician, it is responsible for overseeing daily maintenance operations, training staff, and ensuring that critical building systemssuch as HVAC, boilers, plumbing, electrical, and safety systemsare functioning effectively. The position plans and schedules preventative and corrective work, coordinates contracted services, manages inventories, and ensures completion of assigned tasks across multiple County buildings. This role includes opening designated buildings each morning, addressing safety hazards, and carrying the after-hours emergency call phone on a rotating basis. The position reports to the Facilities Director and may supervise other County staff as assigned.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee operations, maintenance, and repair of facility systems including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, ventilation, fire suppression, and boilers. Must obtain and maintain a Montana LP Boiler Operator License.
  • Manage system diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and emergency repairs. Interacts with and adjusts building control systems. Maintains logs for emergency generators and conducts ADA inspections.
  • Lead facility maintenance efforts at the County Detention Center, maintain security and confidentiality at all times.
  • Perform and supervise routine maintenance tasks such as lighting repairs, plumbing fixes, furniture repairs, and general upkeep of County buildings.
  • Coordinate service vendors and assists with equipment or furniture moves. Ensures proper receipt and storage of deliveries.
  • Maintain inventories of tools, parts, and equipment; order supplies and evaluates product cost, quality, and urgency.
  • Schedule, assign, and track work orders using the computerized maintenance management system. Ensures preventive maintenance is completed timely and accurately.
  • Maintain safety protocols including MSDS documentation, PPE availability, and lockout/tagout procedures. Helps identify and mitigate safety and operational risks.
  • Provide daily direction, mentorship, and training to field maintenance staff. Identifies and escalates staff or vendor performance issues to the Facilities Director.
  • Conduct facility walkthroughs and inspections; reports findings and recommends necessary repairs or improvements.
  • Prioritize urgent or emergency issues (e.g., heating failures, security concerns, flooding) based on building needs and operational impact.
  • Recommend energy-saving initiatives, system improvements, and process efficiencies.
Other Duties as Assigned
  • Participate in special projects, cross-coverage, training, and emergency response efforts.
  • During County-declared emergencies, may be required to provide services related to disaster response and recovery.
This position requires a comprehensive understanding of commercial building operations, including systems for HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical infrastructure. The incumbent must be knowledgeable in low-pressure boiler systems and related safety and control devices and must obtain a Montana LP Boiler Operator License within one year of hire.

Additional required knowledge includes:
  • Principles of energy efficiency and ADA compliance
  • Electrical systems, plumbing, light carpentry, door hardware, and locking mechanisms
  • Troubleshooting of mechanical and electrical issues
  • General construction methods and facility safety standards
  • Risk management and workplace safety practices
  • Use of Microsoft Office and facilities management software

The position requires strong leadership and supervisory skills, with the ability to direct staff, delegate tasks, and provide on-the-job training. Candidates must demonstrate effective verbal and written communication, sound judgment, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Building positive working relationships across departments and working as a contributing member of the facilities team is essential.The required knowledge, skills, and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to:
  • Completion of a technical school program or recognized apprenticeship in a building trades or facilities-related field and
  • At least five (5) years of progressively responsible work experience in one or more building systems (e.g., HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, security)

Additional requirements:
  • Proven experience in a leadership or supervisory role within a facilities or maintenance team
  • Ability to obtain Montana LP Boiler Operator License within one (1) year of hire
  • Willingness to complete additional training and certifications as systems and technology evolve

Licenses and Certifications : Position must possess a valid drivers license issued by the state of Montana or attain a Montana drivers license within six months of hire and be insurable under the Countys liability policies. As a condition of hire, the final candidate will be required to successfully pass a criminal history check and background investigation.
