GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a Fabricator for the Equipment Program in Cheyenne, Wyoming. This position will build and fabricate snow removal equipment, repair and maintain a safe, high-quality equipment fleet, and perform a wide variety of repairs and preventive maintenance and safety inspections on all types of heavy equipment, and vehicles with minimal supervision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Performs welding fabrication as required.
  • Diagnoses hydraulic and electrical problems.
  • Rebuilds hydraulic systems by disassembling, inspecting, and replacing broken and worn-out parts.
  • Reads and interprets technical blueprints and electrical schematics.
  • Designs, fabricates, bends, and installs custom-fit stainless steel hydraulic lines and other parts and equipment.
  • Orders parts and supplies.
  • Operates lathes and milling machines for the fabrication of specialty and obsolete parts.
  • Inputs data into software tracking systems or databases.
  • Assists in assessing the needs of the client.
  • Maintains and repairs pneumatic equipment.
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of repairs on automotive or heavy equipment and other self-propelled or towed equipment with limited supervision.
  • Ability to overhaul and rebuild major components such as engines and transmissions, and drive train repairs.
  • Ability to install various truck components, including extendible wing plows, hydraulic tanks, pumps, toolboxes, valves, and hitches.
  • Install, diagnose, and repair electrical systems and sensors on all WYDOT vehicles.
  • Installation of the truck bed and box accessories.
  • Preparation/painting of various truck and spreader parts.

Ability to obtain a State Welding Certification

**The successful applicant must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements. Commercial Learner's permit must be obtained within 30 days of hire.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of electrical theory, hydraulic theory, metallurgy, automotive, and diesel knowledge.
  • Knowledge of general shop, power train, engines, electrical, hydraulics, rigging, and administrative procedures.
  • Knowledge of precision machine tools, biomechanics, physiology, and welding processes.
  • Knowledge of diesel and gas engines both mechanical and electronic for overhauls and repairs.
  • Knowledge of metallurgy of different steels.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education : Associate's Degree

Experience: 0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Fabrication)

OR Education & Experience Substitution: 2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Fabrication) Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: None
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time
  • Must be able to travel


NOTES:

  • FLSA: Non-Exempt
  • The Wyoming Department of Transportation is a Drug-Free Workplace
  • Individuals in this classification will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing
  • Employees will be required to respond to the equipment shop within 30 minutes after a call-in and be able to be contacted by telephone from the shop

    • Temporary employees accepting a full-time permanent position.

    • One year of service to WYDOT must be completed; failure to complete this requirement will forfeit the hiring incentive; funds will be recouped from final pay.
    • Internal candidates would be required to remain in the position for a minimum of one (1) year from their promotion date.
    • Employees would only be eligible for one (1) hiring bonus in a 12-month period.
    • If the employee elects to downgrade through an active recruitment and/or appointment during the twelve (12) month period, they would be required to pay the bonus back.
