The Division of Juvenile Justice's Facility Maintenance section employs a regional hub structure, consisting of three geographically located hubs: Cabarrus, CA Dillion, and Lenoir/Dobbs. These hubs serve the Western, Central, and Eastern regions, and operate as the primary locations for storing division hardware assets and deploying manpower for complex preventive and corrective maintenance tasks.

The mission of the Division of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (DJJDP) in the Department of Public Safety, is to reduce and prevent juvenile delinquency by effectively operating an integrated, comprehensive juvenile justice system that intervenes through education and treatment of youth in order to promote youth accountability, strengthen families and increase public safety

Technical work in the analysis of the more complex construction, modification, or repair problems in building heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment or systems to include:

  • Independently troubleshoot heating, ventilation, or air conditioning problems, recommending parts needed and work procedures, and serve as a working supervisor in the construction, modification, or repair.

  • Review heating or cooling requirements of existing buildings, compare these requirements to existing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, and recommend modifications to achieve better system effectiveness and efficiency.

  • Serve as the technical expert in one or more areas of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning field such as absorption and centrifugal chillers or electrical, pneumatic, and electronic controls, through advising other mechanics on repair problems and providing training in their areas of expertise.

Work Schedule:

This is a full-time position. 8:00am-5:00pm. This position is considered essential and is expected to be at work despite weather conditions and is subject to on-call status.

To qualify for this position, applicants must demonstrate ALL of the following KSAs:

  • Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
  • Knowledge of electricity sufficient to troubleshoot and repair complex electrical control circuits.
  • Knowlege of troubleshooting (DDC) Direct Digital Controls.
  • Knowlege of the design and operation of centrifugal and reciprocal compressors.
  • Knowledge of operating (BAU) Building Automation Systems.

Management Preferences (Optional): These skills are not required but managers may choose to interview/select applicants who demonstrate Management Preferences.

  • Ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions and prescribe repair procedures.

  • Ability to analyze building heating and air conditioning equipment and recommend modifications to achieve better operation or energy savings.

  • Knowledge of refrigeration theory

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of progressive experience in the installation, maintenance or repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling, chilled water distribution and control systems including one year at the journey level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications Requires current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.
