About Us: The City of Glendale Parks and Recreation Department is split into two distinct areas:
- The Parks Division manages and maintains all public parks, open spaces, trails, storm water retention basins, landscaping at municipal facilities and Thunderbird Conservation Park. The Division is also responsible for monitoring and ensuring the safety and security of park and facility use.
- The Recreation Division offers opportunities to enhance the social, physical, mental and economic health of our community through a variety of diverse recreation programs and facilities. Recreation programs and events are held at the Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center, the Glendale Adult Center, Historic Sahuaro Ranch, the five community centers and at basketball, tennis, skate courts and other recreation facilities throughout the city.
The Role:
The Field Working Supervisor is responsible for overseeing multiple small crews or one large crew of service workers engaged in the maintenance and care of parks, facility grounds, playgrounds, sports complexes, and trails. This role involves planning and scheduling work projects across the city, ensuring public open spaces and facility grounds are safe, well-maintained, and free from hazardous debris. The supervisor addresses public concerns, ensures compliance with federal, state, city, and county regulations, and promotes the safety and well-being of staff.
Salary: This position is:
- FLSA Exempt, and will be paid a salary regardless of hours worked per week.
- A Grade 406 with with an annual salary between $63,108 - $94,662.

Holiday, Vacation, and Sick Leave: Regular status positions offer:
- The City of Glendale observes 10.5 holidays per year, and full-time employees are also granted an additional 12 hours of holiday special leave to celebrate their cultural or religious holidays throughout the c alendar year.
- Vacation leave accrues at:
- 5.33 hours per pay period (138 hours/17.25* days per year)
- Increases to 6.12 hours after 5 years
- Then caps out at 7.6 hours after 10 years of service.
- Sick leave accrues at 4.4 hours per pay period (114 hours/14.25 days* per year).
* Days per year estimates are based on an 8-hour work day.
Retirement: This position participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS).
- The current contribution rate is 12.27%.
- Contributions are mandatory, and are collected each pay period.

Hires, interviews, selects, assigns work and schedules, monitors and evaluates work performance, coaches, counsels, motivates and makes employment decisions.
- Schedules time-off and evaluates performance of assigned staff.
- Determines workload analysis; schedules personnel, tracks and processes the timekeeping information.
- Inspects and monitors work of staff and contracted services to confirm work is being performed and completed per standards, contracts and best practices.
- Reviews blue prints, plans, designs and makes recommendations for compliance with department practices and city codes related to parks and recreation.
- Enforces park rules and regulations and provides direction to staff as it relates to education and enforcement.
- Manages and approves expenses for assigned budgets.
- Plans and organizes maintenance, repair, renovations and replacement of recreational courts, parks, playgrounds, trails, shade structures, drinking fountains, flood and sprinkler irrigation systems, landscaped areas, plants/trees/turf and city facility grounds.
- Gathers and prepares statistical reports on a daily, weekly, monthly, or annual basis as required.
- Resolves and handles internal and external complaints and concerns.
- Supervises and participates in maintaining stocks, inventory, tools, equipment and fleet.
- Conducts research and/or audits, analyzes findings, prepares reports and makes recommendations to management.
- Manages ongoing training programs.
- Operates a City vehicle.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education.
Knowledge of:
- Rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to area of assignment.
- Carpentry, Concrete/Masonry, Plumbing, Construction, and Landscaping
- Materials, tools, equipment, safety hazards and precautions common to the assigned areas of responsibility.
- Effective supervisory principles and training practices
- Trail management and building
- Planting and care of turf, flowers, trees, shrubs, and soils, soil conditions and fertilizers
- Principles and practices of safety management
- Equipment and methods used in the maintenance of sprinkler and flood irrigation systems
- Operation and maintenance of equipment such as tractors, backhoes, brush chippers, stump grinders, chain saws, forklift, towing trailers, mowers, flail mowers and dump trucks
Ability to:
- Operate a City vehicle
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, city staff and the public
- Plan, assign, coordinate and supervise the work performed by subordinates
- Operate a computer and related software
- Communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing
- Interpret and explain pertinent department, division and city policies and procedures

Special Requirements
- This position is classified as safety-sensitive which requires candidates to successfully undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to employment. They will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy. A post-offer physical assessment is required. The City of Glendale will incur the cost of all required testing.
- Valid Arizona driver's License.
- May be subject to call back, stand-by duty and rotating shifts.
- CPR/AED Certified within first 90 days of hire.
- Certification of National Playground Safety Institute's Certified Playground Safety Inspectors' Course and Examination within 180 days of hire.
- Completion of Smartscape/Advanced Smartscape or Arizona Landscape Contractors Association Training Program (preferred).
