Job Description
The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for a Mechanical Engineer or Senior Mechanical Engineer for the Facilities Services, Planning and Construction Department. The position manages deferred mechanical systems projects, interprets, and enforces applicable codes, standards, and departmental criteria. The position may manage projects at any part of the project life cycle, from initial planning to construction completion and closeout. The position meets with faculty and staff to define scope of projects, code restraints, budget estimates and management of assigned small to large mechanical systems projects and contracts to be constructed in accordance with university and construction standards.
Mechanical Engineer
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to :
Manage the planning, design, update, and remodel of existing mechanical systems;
Evaluate final products overall performance, reliability, and safety;
Alter and/or modify designs to meet requirements and eliminate malfunctions;
Manage deferred mechanical engineering projects;
Evaluate and understand project requirements to plan materials handling systems; design and select components;
Oversee the execution of all aspects of the project life cycle;
Coordinate information sharing with other departments and entities;
Interpret and enforce applicable codes;
Develop design standards and departmental criteria; and
Other duties as assigned.
Senior Mechanical Engineer
In addition to the duties listed above responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Plan and design new and remodeled mechanical systems impacting campus utility services, campus distribution networks, and building systems;
Develop and implement energy conservation projects;
Oversee major repairs, replacement, or installation of new mechanical systems from planning, through design and construction;
Define scope of work, interpret applicable design and construction standards and codes, develop estimates, and meet with project constituents;
Supervise and direct consultants, contractors, and facilities staff;
Train, support, and provide technical advice to clients and field representatives;
Meet with University community, federal, state and local agencies, as well as the general public to collaborate on conservation efforts;
Collaborate with Facilities Services staff to develop a routine preventative maintenance program; and
Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications * Candidates will be hired at the level comparable to their experience, knowledge, skills and abilities
Mechanical Engineer
Bachelors Degree and four (4) years of related professional experience; OR
Masters degree and two (2) years of related professional experience
Related Experience: In commercial mechanical engineering and/or architectural/engineering design, project management including commercial and institutional facility standards and requirements.
Certification and Licensure
A valid Class C drivers license or higher operators license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
Senior Mechanical Engineer
Bachelors Degree and five (5) years of related professional experience; OR
Masters degree and three (3) years of related professional experience
Related Experience: In mechanical engineering design, administration, and project management including commercial and institutional facility standards and requirements and experience in a supervisory or responsible project charge capacity directly related to institutional facility design and construction .
Certification and Licensure
A valid Class C drivers license or higher operators license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
Registration as a Mechanical Engineer at the time of appointment.
* Reciprocity is acceptable if Nevada license is received within six months of employment in the Facilities Services Department.
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates with a Nevada State Board of Professional Engineers License are encouraged to apply.
Physical Demands
This position requires walking or standing to a significant degree and pushing and/or pulling; exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. This position requires the incumbent to climb ladders and enter attics, crawl spaces, mechanical rooms, trenches, and other such confined spaces.
Schedule and Travel
The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; this is subject to change based on organizational needs. This position may be able to elect an alternative work schedule. This position may require occasional travel.
This position is designated as Essential Personnel. In the event of a campus emergency, special event, closure to maintain campus safety or building operations, this position may be required to work outside of regularly scheduled hours.
