Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Operates various trucks, equipment, power tools, hand tools, and diagnostic devices to maintain and repair wastewater collection lines and lift stations, such as service truck with crane, backhoe, jet truck, skid steer, vacuum truck, camera equipment, gas/electric/air power tools, shovels, masonry tools, carpentry tools, and electrical tools.

  • Installs, performs maintenance, and repairs the collection system pipes and/or manholes.
  • Performs routine maintenance and repairs of lift stations, force mains, and other associated items.
  • Removes stoppages in the collection system using various hydraulic and mechanical equipment.
  • Routinely monitors flows and operating conditions throughout the collection system to verify system is functioning properly.
  • Monitors known locations of customer grease traps to ensure they are in proper working order to avoid blockages.
  • Inspects and approves work performed by others such as laterals, manholes, and collection system pipes.
  • Performs video inspections using closed circuit video for gathering information about the condition of the collection system and aids in prioritizing repairs.
  • During high flow periods, routinely monitors problem areas to determine frequency of events by keeping records, documenting preventive maintenance, and repairs.
  • Uses various infiltration and inflow detection methods in preparation for removal of clean water from the system.
  • Assists in identifying collection system deficiencies and developing potential solutions to eliminate or minimize problems, disruptions to customers, and protects the integrity of the collection system.
  • Ability to work on various electrical systems used in lift stations with both single and three phase voltages such as 120/240, 120/208, and 277/480. Also, 12v direct current systems and SCADA connections related to the monitoring of the individual components of each lift station. Ability to safely trouble shoot and replace defective components in equipment, junction boxes, service panels, and control panels.
  • Periodically assists in cleaning and maintaining vehicles, equipment, and work space such as washing, lubricating, checking fluid levels, changing oil and filters.
  • Complies with safety procedures established by regulatory agencies to ensure the protection of all workers.
  • Complies with safe and manageable traffic control procedures for all work in public rights-of-way.
  • Periodically assists with flagging and traffic control in work zones.
  • Answers questions and provides information to the public at work sites as needed.
  • Working knowledge of the City's Sewer Use Ordinance how it pertains to the collection system and able to initiate proper response per ordinance.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Utility, construction, or other related work experience preferred.
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of department safety policies and procedures, and ability to properly operate a various trucks, tools, and equipment.
  • Ability to physically perform assigned duties including: far vision, depth perception, hearing, communicating, handling, grasping objects, standing, kneeling for long periods, walking on uneven terrain, pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying objects weighing more than 50 pounds, reaching, bending, and crouching.
  • Working knowledge of local geography and ability to read and interpret local maps.
  • Ability to work alone and with others in a team environment, and maintain appropriate, respectful interrelationships with co-workers.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions/directions, and appropriately respond to constructive criticism.
  • Ability to comply with all employer/department personnel policies and work rules, including attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.
  • Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate and hostile persons.
  • Ability to occasionally work extended, weekend and/or evening hours.
  • Ability to regularly serve on 24-hour call and respond swiftly, rationally and decisively to emergency situations.
  • Possession of a valid Indiana Class B, with air brakes minimum, commercial driver's license and demonstrated safe driving record.
