Job Summary

General Summary:

Under supervision performs routine carpentry tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of wood structures, fixtures and furnishings according to blueprints, drawings and specific instructions.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Performs general carpentry tasks such as demolishing and rebuilding walls, installing suspended ceilings, installing drywall and so forth.

2. Designs, builds, installs and/or repairs shelves, bulletin boards, desk tops, cabinets, partitions and so forth according to blueprints or drawings.

3. Installs doors, frames windows and wall shelves. Hangs doors, sets frames and fixes door closers and hinges.

4. Builds a variety of fixtures on request such as picture frames and coat racks.

5. Estimates time required, and supplies needed for carpentry projects.

6. Operates hand and power tools such as saws, lathes, handsaws, sanders, drills, drill pressers, hammers and so forth.

7. Performs minor repairs of hospital furniture such as repairing broken chairs, desks, etc.

8. Responds to requests for carpentry services as requested.

9. Maintains and controls an inventory of parts and supplies for door hardware.

10. Installs and maintains doors, door closures, crash bars, exit devices as well as any miscellaneous door hardware, excluding the locks.

11. Recommends hardware specs for projects as required.

12. Maintains a clean work area.

13. May assist other maintenance staff with minor repairs, painting and so forth.

14. Performs other duties as assigned.

15. May be required to carry the on-call pager.

16. May be required to work weekends on rotating shifts.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

1. Must be able to read, write and perform arithmetic calculations in order to read and interpret drawings and sketches and complete accurate measurements.

2. Requires knowledge of carpentry skills such as cabinet making usually acquired through 2 years of technical training or related experience.

3. Two to three years of direct carpentry experience in wood constructions, maintenance and repair required.

Skills and Abilities Required:

1. Must be able to operate safely and efficiently a variety of hand and power tools.

2. Work requires the ability to lift lumber, doors and heavy times (over 30 lbs.) regularly.

Working Conditions:

1. Work requires regular exposure to dust, dirt and excessive noise from power tools.

2. Work requires regular walking, standing and climbing of ladders.

3. May be required to work with a containment or in a containment booth.

4. May be required to work with a respirator.
